mCCR Azimuth "What have you done!?"

Hi Guys
Yes, as usual my wife asked me-.
What have you done? Canīt you ever take off your fingers from a Reb.

NO, of course NOT.

So I tried to modify an Azimuth Pro, the new actual version.

The idea was to make a mCCR without complete rebuilding the unit and still have it as SCR availabe, for holiday, training our what ever.
So as flexible as possible

Best is to have a look to the pictures, should explain all.
1. I changed the tanks, from 2x4 l to 1x4 L and 1x5 L, this not just to have 1L more gas, but the 5L tank is a little bit longer, so more comfortable with the valve and to mount the 1.stage.

2. Of course a 3cell sensor house internally with a Shearwater Pursuit

3. I added a 2 liter aluminium (due to weight and trimm) tank for O2 with closed DS4 stage and CMF valve. O2 injection is going to exhale bag

4. Still using the original switchblock with the manual bypass, I added a ball valve (swagelok) to the center hose, coming from upper tank (4 l).
The adapter to add the ball valve is special made to ensure the ball have is in right position and as short as possible

In mCCR mode I close the needle valve to ZERO flow of course.

5. Some LP hoses are changed to have optimal lenght (I still need to change two to optmize...have to make the right lenght first.....)

6. some minor changes were made to the shell itself, I just cutted a little bit to make sure the 5 Liter tank with valve to the other side is in good position

The ball valve is necessary to avoid wrong flow (and wrong bypass) directions when using different gas in both tanks, and to avoid draining the upper tank also on pushing he bypass.
The normal (Azimuth) way of working is: Both tanks are open, the lower level (blue dot, lower hose, lower tank) is closed, bypass and flow over the needle valve (if needle is open) is only coming from upper tank (red dot, center hose, upper tank.)

If you know move the levet and open the gas from lower tank and push the bypass, it will fire gas from both tanks into inhale bag!! Not a good way.

So when you like/need to open the upper tank, close the ball valve and gas is only coming from lower tank.

In this way both tanks are really independent, for that reason I installed a BOV o the unit, connected to one tank.

And an extra OC regulator XTX50 (you never know what you need) is connected to the second tank, here also BCD and Dry suit can be connected.
This gives me a real bailout, in fact an separat system (gas) which I can switch to the Loop.

And in case I like (need) it as a SCR Unit. ...I just take off the O2 tank, close the injecting point in the exhale bag and open (adjust) the needle valve with the proper flow.

Missing anything? Hope not...

Any notes of improvement are welcomme

Cheers
Martin

Nice Job...

Is the BOV the new one from Tecme?

Looks great...

Cheers

Yes, simplify, simplify, simplify. Do you need all these tanks connected to the bloc with multiple shutoffs/valves and lever to open/close...? Other than that: Nice rig, nice mods but it's probably a hell of a rig to load & carry around.BestPhilippe

Nice looking job Martin. Hope it works as well as it looks!
Can't see that you missed anything. Is the pursuit hard wired into the sensor housing as well? and what is the total weight of the unit now?

Greetings from Denmark!

Paul

Hi Paul,

yep on this picture there is the Pursuit setpoint controller...I was thinking (just for fun and testing) to make it also a Hybrid...but...I love the pure mCCR...
Normally there is a normal Pursuit with Fischer cable.

I just cheked the weight
Scrubber empty, the 2 steel tanks half full, the 2 L Alu aprox 70 bar.
With this the unit is around 38 Kg.

But keep in mind there is already 4 Kilo of ballast installed in the Azimuth, the top barrel is weight, 4 Kg

So "not that" heavy...I would say...

Cheers

M

Hi Martin,

How did you integrate the ADV to the unit? I know that the Azimuth comes without an ADV. Or are the new ones with ADV?

Kind regards

No I did not install any ADV (so far..).
I still use the original manual bypass.

Soooo what now Martin, lose some weight off the belt or unit, trim checks and then get some relaxing diving in!? I guess 38kg isn't too bad for the unit, although I'm spoilt with 10 kg less than that with my little kissed Ray. But you will have more dive time between scrubber and cylinder changes than me!
I'm a bit like you in liking the manual CCR and can't imagine ever wanting an ECCR.

Regards...Paul

Yep, ask a boat captain taking Reb divers out for a long time

Just one sentence I remember well.....

Citate:
" Iīve never seen E-diiivers doinī all dayly scheduled diiives aaall weeek, the manual guys jumī in, come back, have fun and jumī in again. They nearly never skip a diiive."

(sorry I really canīt write his slang....)

What does this tell us....

Cheers Martin
