My understanding is that the recomendation to not use OLED displays for new products at the moment has nothing to do with their useability. It's down to the fact that once current stocks are used there are no more until someone else starts manufacturing them. So the recomendation is down to supply issues if you are looking to ship any sort of volume.

Hello Simon,
for me it is not a problem..when oled won't be available anymore I'll use mine until they die and after I will return to classic lcd...
I am just an home builder and I have enough components in stock to built 15 oxymeters enough for the rest of my life (((-:
I would not like to be a professionnal rebreather maker...oliged to follow every componant availability...
I hope that the liquid vision makers will always have their oled display available for their computer.

Eric,
The typical OLED display is specified at a VCC of 12v nominal, so 25ma is quite alot
No, I am specifying current draw from the Li-Po battery at 3.7V (=25mA @ 3.7V). So if you want the 12V draw, you have to divide. And by the way we are no longer using OSRAM OLED's. We have switched to two new suppliers. However we bought thousands of OSRAM OLED's, so we have the choice to continue using them if we want to. Anyone who thinks OLED supply is a problem needs to do more research. There are tons available from different suppliers, many of them drop-in exchangeable, and new compatible units are coming out all the time. We see no problem in supply for any foreseeable future. That would be a good draw.. When I was playing with OLED displays, they all had very similiar charateristics with the full display illuminated at full intensity.. I was usually seeing around 100mw power consumption.. Of course changing the temp also changed the power draw..

While most people are using the OLED term generically there are differences between the discontinued displays, and many of the current displays.. Most of the ones that are being produced now are a different technology.. You usually find them now classified as "monocrome displays"

The discontinued displays were "large molecule" oled (sometimes they were refrred to as PLED), the current OLED displays available are either color or monochrome and are based on "small molecule" design..

The big advantage of the large molecule design is that the life is longer and is more tolerant to screen burn..

Re: oled displays

We only use OLED displays that have at least 40,000 hour lives (= time to reach half of original brightness).

for a diving app thats many times more than needed!..

Many of the large molecule displays were hitting 100k to 80% brightness, great for applications that the display was always on, but not a necessity in a dive computer..

unfortunately both types are not forgiving when then come in contact with liquids..

Hi,

I've installed the character oled display, and it *** ked the circuit, it pumped so mutch power then the battery voltage (displays in my program) has depleted my 4 AA new batteries in half an hour ...
in addition the necessary current was so big (120mA) that my circuit was oscillating... the 3 ppo2 in air were moving from .23 to .18 and back to .18 and so forth....
I think the tension reference (a zener in this circuit) was affected ...
well in desoldered this display and everything went back ok.....
I had to try.

regards
