For the machining gurus who've done a DSV...

When you machine the cage, how did you go about making the bit the mouth piece attaches to? I know I could go ala' Tom Rose with a large ball valve but how would you whip something on a simple home lathe? Make the cage from PVC and melt a bit of PVC tubing and glue it on? Delrin doesn't glue too well so I am somewhat stumped...

I've made them from PVC and aluminum and the method is the same. While in tube form I just machine off .030 to .045" except for the last 1/8 inch. In other words making all but the last 1/8 of the tube thinner. That becomes the notch that inserts nicely into the inner grove average mouth grip. PVC I heat and bend to look just like the male part of any regulator body at the point you install the mouth grip. Same with aluminum.

I molded mine from PVC. Started w/ a 1" (IIRC) fitting and cut off the part I needed. I then cleaned up the bit in the lathe. The mold I made from a nice scrap of oak I had handy. I carefully cut/ filed/ sanded the shape I wanted. I then drilled two long holes for alignment pins (16 penny nails w/ heads cut off). Oak was then cut down the center & pins installed into one side. Round bit heated w/ heat gun till slightly squishy. Put into open mold then mold closed in vice. Cooled part bonded into PVC body w/ 3M ScotchWeld 2216. Mouth bite is Poseidon.
