a new sub forum for home builder on Rebreather World ?

Hi all,

4 months ago I bought a small lath and will soon get my milling machine.

I am machining delrin, pvc, metal etc to make sensor holder , lung ports , adv oxymeter houssings...etc.

even in my Rebreather works perfect I need to built new

I' am of course façing a couple of problems....

A micro lathe costs from 500 to 1500 euros and it is a dream for all of the home builders.

I was wondering if they were enough people interrested in this field to ask Rebreather World to create a sub forum for Rebreather amateur machinits.

I am of course ready to post many examples of my activity and to animate the sub forum.

just in case some are interested just let everybody know about it so that we see if there it is of any interrest.

regards

jean mi

Post away in here for now if we get enough interest and posts we'll look at splitting it out.

Re: a new sub forum for home builder on Rebreather World ?

I'd second the motion for a subforum. The forum will attract interest, rather than just seeing what happens in the normal forum. Machine Shop operations are a huge part of homebuilding, and in the end becomes a hobby in itself. This is an important subject for us. When we were on the NWD list, it became important enough that I ended up getting a Sherline miniature machine tools dealership simply to assist others in getting discount machine tools. I think just from that smaller list that we ended up selling two dozen lathes and mills. The interest is there, even if it seems latent.

Salut JM,

I agree with your idea, I'll tell about pieces I make on this part to share this experience.

Some projects now, DSV hose connector, filter and HID and LED lamps, may be spools too

A bientot.

Re: a new sub forum for home builder on Rebreather World ?

Hi Dave and all,

I decided to buy a smal lathe after visiting your wes page about the tube oxymeter houssings
I boutgth a small chinese lathe that I put on my bench and started learning how to turn parts, it took me 3 months not to master it but to start doing acceptable parts and found out that it was a fantastic tool for the Rebreather home builders.
it is really cheap and use full and it is far better to spend the necessary time to learn it to make proper work then simply use pvc tube and gluing them together to try to make Rebreather parts.
I think a sub forum could be the place to share our experience and to move forward quicker toward our goals the doing every thing alone wasting time and delrin .

just and example, I am making a sensor holder, I went to a tought time finding a small quantity od plastic to turn the cape...it took me 3 weeks 20 ails to plastic dealer to find out that the size of delrin cylinder I need could only be purchased in by 2 meters long parts....too expensive...

One week ago I took an empty can on soup and poured polyuréthane résin in it... the day after I put it on the late, machine the plastic blo I had made and finished the work fo 15 dollars instead of mutch more and without having to wait 2 weeks to get the derin by post , and for a simple cape that did not required an very resistant plastic it was enough quick cheap ans far enough to make what I need.

it is just an example but those ideas could easily be shared in a dedicated place.

this is the reason why I dared to suggest to create a sub forum; but only if a part of us is interrested otherwise it woud not be wise.

as I was saying I could start buy publishing photos of my ridiculous lathe and of the work I am doing at the time making oxymeters and sensor holders.

regards

jean mi

Re: a new sub forum for home builder on Rebreather World ?

Yesterday I pourred a lead "lingot" square shaped to reinforce the place between the CL in my SS Kiss case. I'll put it on a lathe to correct the wrong shapes and to drill hole in it. Soon pics of this stuff

Cheers.

Re: a new sub forum for home builder on Rebreather World ?

One important add-on to any lathe is a quick-change turret. That way, you can mount all the tools used fequently and just swap them as needed. Nothing better for improved productivity. You can buy as many tool holders on the cheap and this is a good idea. This virtually eliminates setup times and onerous shiming with a regular turret.

One great source for tooling is McMaster, it seems that that brazed-on carbides have great properties especially when machining my favorite ss. They seem to have highly thermally conductive alloys for the shank which do a good job. They come in left and right handed versions and just about every shape desirable. The brazed-on carbides are quite tough and can take a lot of punishment.

Although the rotatable carbide inserts are great conceptually, they are best for the large CNC machines. Unless working in softer metals or plastics of course.

I third the motion. At least that'd be a source for me as to whom I can ask to make stuff for me, once it's become a hobby Well I can always ask, can't I?
