Re: Homebuild training and certification available

As the others have said, *if* I decide to mod my Dolphin to CCR so I can visit the 50 - 80m wrecks a certification would be great as it would allow me to buy trimix, use commercial dive boats, etc etc
Just now if I go to a commercial dive shop and ask for a trimix fill, or even 100% O2, most will ask to see a Q Card.
In time the major organisations (BSAC, PADI etc) might even be convinced to let us stay
(ok I'm getting carried away there..)

To buy a KISS for instance is another 2,500 ukpounds plus the money sorting out a used one to how I like it etc etc.
So why not a MCCR Dolphin? Purpose made parts are easily available and if I can get a bike/car/aircraft inspected and passed as a reasonably safe gesign why not a rebreather

Re: Homebuild training and certification available

" My experience of most self-builders is, that whilst they are completely bonkers , they do, on the whole have a reasonable grasp of what they are doing and Phil and I, with our experience, should have a decent grasp of what should be included in a homebuild CCR."

Good on you Dave - a healthy level of scepticism might save me if I turn up on your door with The "Dugong 1" made from our fridge and a discarded anaesthetic circuit. I've little doubt yourself,Phil or Baz would deliver an ....ahem ...honest(!) assessment of the unit being proposed.......

Here's a quote from Coops circa 2005:

"If I wanna fly to Miami I don't build a f**king plane! I buy a f**king ticket!!.....doofus......."

freedom is the key word.
if one make the choice of building and diving his rebreather, let us do what he want.
nobody is mad, the internet is there to remind people that diving a rebreather is dangerous
absolutly all the modifiyers have come here or elsewhere on the net and found out that rebreather is dangereous that it has killed many divers ...
how many home builder died diving theire home built ?
not many mybye a couple not more.
what is absolutly sure is that pushing the home builder out of the clubs is worst the welcoming them.
other question
how long a ccr course lasts ?
how long a trainee spends with his instructor analysing the rebreather ?
how long a freshly certified ccr diver wait before puting trimix in his tank and diving deep particularly when he was an experienced oc diver.

one of my best friends was an experienced oc and cave diver, he bought an inspi, spent 3 days/3 dives with an instructor got his card, did a couple of dives and went down in a cave...

there are a lot of divers like him.

an home builder spends hours thinking , studying his machine, he usualy do it with a friend that already did it, then after he start testing it is a pool or in shalow water .
the home builder always doubt in the begining and go step by step.

helping the home builders giving them a certification is a good idea.

regards
