Here's my version of the PVCBVDSV:

It's a 1" PVC ball valve, drilled axially to accept a 3/4" PVC pipe (thinwall!), heated and shaped to an oval to fit a standard mouthpiece. Valve body is bored out to fit the mushroom valves from an Interspiro quasi-AGA mask (included with the BioPak 240 "rebreather kit"). Is the 7/8" bore of this DSV too small, considering the rest of the loop is 1-1/8" and greater diameter? Probably, but then again, where is the smallest restriction in the loop? I'd guess it's the gap between your upper and lower incisors as you grip the mouthpiece. In-depth dive report to follow.

I'm almost afraid to show pics of my homebuilt BOV...

This is Quality Its is just what I am looking for, you mentioned you got the mushroom valves from a Bio pack 240 ??? where can I get one of them from??

Cheers
Dave

Re: home made dsv

Hey David,
i boosted my valves from a couple of respirators that were gointg to be trashed. Specifically the 3M type. I've even seen a couple of MSA Dust masks that had usable valves in them. Hit home Despot again and go looking at the respirators and dust masks.

Dr. Bob, Patrick Duffy, Tom Rose, even Bill Stone - none of these guys probably "invented" this use of the hardware store ball valve. Form follows function.
I certainly did not, but I have had a lot of fun making and diving them. Rob Bradish and I have actually devised an improved DSV we will publish sometime this year. It's disgustingly simple....

Why is this? What is there to hide?
There is nothing to hide. You should read the rest of the site to understand it better. It is sponsored by Czech Navy (We will take you for a ride (TM)) after all.
I put it up many years ago when I started playing with rebreathers, we shared information then and had fun doing it.

Golem Rebreathers is my personal site (long dormnant) and has no affiliation with Golem Gear, Inc., uh, except the fact that I own both

Thanks!

BioPak 240's show up on ebay every so often. Parts are available from:

Biomarine Inc.
456 Creamery Way
Exton, PA 19341
USA

Telephone: 800.378.2287
In Pennsylvania: 610.524.8800
Fax: 610.524.8807

If all you're looking for are the valves, take a look at http://www.biomarineinc.com/manuals/...240LWBench.pdf. Parts I'm using are 11,12, & 13 on page 56 & 57. I think these may be standard AGA parts? Maybe more easily available from an Interspiro dealer on your side of the pond?

I am surprised how many people (including relatives) think that that site is actually run by religious people. It is a parody web site made to poke fun of religious fundamentalists. But you guys knew that, right?

Funny site yes - but man a little scary when a "front runner" for leader of your country strongly believes he will get his own planet when he dies.

The only thing that concerns me about a DIY DSV is that PVC is said to off gas nasty chemicals.

.................except when the brown sticky stuff hits the whirling thingy.......Besides, you need a BOV not a DSV.

Dr. Bob, Patrick Duffy, Tom Rose, even Bill Stone - none of these guys probably "invented" this use of the hardware store ball valve. Form follows function.

If you want to get your hands on the same one as Bill stone has in photo, link Georg Fischer LLC - Ball Valve Type 343 Vertical The reason Bill used this one is you dont need to drill a hole and use pvc glues to put extra piece for mouth piece.

here's a photo showing the mouth piece.
AARG

Ball Valve Type 343 Vertical Description
Manual full port vertical, 3-way ball valve with both. True union permits radial installation or removal. L-port ball provides independent connection of inlets with outlet. Diverter ball provides interconnections of two inlets with outlet for mixing or interconnection of outlet for proprtional diverter operation.
  • Available in PVC and CPVC with solvent cement socket or threaded end connections.
  • PP and PVDF with metric fusion socket or threaded end connections
  • EPDM or FPM seals and PTFE ball seats
  • Handle can be used as a tool for seat adjustment
  • Screwed-in seat carrier has left-hand threads to prevent unscrewing when threaded valve is removed from the line
  • Seat back seal for automatic wear adjustment and consistent torque
  • Can be actuated after installation
