| Re: home made dsv I know nothing of Golem Rebreather's That's the problem. You don't know who you are dealing with or criticizing, and we do. With all due respect: Jakub has been known here for as long as we have had a forum, longer in fact than the existance of RBW on other forums that preceeded this one, and his company is one of the most highly respected manufacturers of high technology rebreather accessories in the world. If you want a radial scrubber for a Meg, he makes it. If you want the worlds best BOV, he makes it. If you want any of 100 'best in the world' items for rebreathers, you buy it from him. He's been a trusted friend of many of us for years, and certain of us 'grew up with him' as homebuilders before he went and made a professional endeavour out of it. Suggest, with all further due respect, that you observe here quietly and politely for a little while and figure out who is who before tossing stones at the old timers. Dave .

Get this thing back on topic. My feeling is that, while you can build a DSV from a ball valve, why bother? Is it to save money? To say that you did it? Well...I've done it, but I still dive with a DSV made by a manufacturer. Then again, I'm not much of a home builder.

| Re: home made dsv The homebuilding gene is either there or not. For working dives, I use a rebreather as a tool and it needs to 'just work', But for play? It's fun to 'hack the system' and dive something I built myself. Most of us here feel the same way. Pure 02 rigs are a ball... and the ones built from Home Depot parts are rewarding and interesting learning tools. Making a DSV helps people understand what they consist of... and all learning is good. This *is* a homebuilders forum! "Buy It" has it's place, but this is not it... But if I *was* gonna buy a DSV, I'd buy it from Golem, which is pretty funny considering the earlier posters comment...... ![]() Sometimes you just gotta laugh. Best, Dave .

With all due respect Dave I was not criticizing or "tossing stones" I was simply asking a question. The comment on his site struck me as strange and was wondering about the reason for it.Dave . Sorry If I caused any offence. It certainly was not intended. Just call me an inquisitive idiot!! ![]()

| Re: home made dsv With all due respect Dave I was not criticizing or "tossing stones" I was simply asking a question. The comment on his site struck me as strange and was wondering about the reason for it. It's called humor! It's an artifact from an earlier time when the old gang enjoyed a certain sense of friendly banter that hid some important things behind a veneer of laughter. Go read the Crestline Experimental Diving Unit pages to get a full feel of this. Read the "Honors of the Association" pages there and you'll "get it". I can see how read in a vacuum you might have found what you read strange. So, no foul, and welcome aboard. Dave .

| Re: home made dsv I have dived with a homeman DSV, it was next to godlyness. I have a BOV now. This is nothing, you should check out Chickenhead labs and CEDU. As I understand it to be a member of CEDU you have to home make an O2 rig and do a mile "combat" swim underwater (I don't know if its mandatory that you survive...Its on my "bucket list") Hey its all about keeping life interesting.

| Re: home made dsv The point has been made in other threads that sometimes the only difference between a homebuilder and a manufacturer is time. Here's an early homebuilder diving a one-off, self-built rebreather. Note the DSV. Dr. Bob, Patrick Duffy, Tom Rose, even Bill Stone - none of these guys probably "invented" this use of the hardware store ball valve. Form follows function. Here's my version of the PVCBVDSV: It's a 1" PVC ball valve, drilled axially to accept a 3/4" PVC pipe (thinwall!), heated and shaped to an oval to fit a standard mouthpiece. Valve body is bored out to fit the mushroom valves from an Interspiro quasi-AGA mask (included with the BioPak 240 "rebreather kit"). Is the 7/8" bore of this DSV too small, considering the rest of the loop is 1-1/8" and greater diameter? Probably, but then again, where is the smallest restriction in the loop? I'd guess it's the gap between your upper and lower incisors as you grip the mouthpiece. In-depth dive report to follow. I'm almost afraid to show pics of my homebuilt BOV... -Dan

| Re: home made dsv Obviously someone got the wrong idea when a RBW sponsor posted a link on what turned out to a very humorous site. It sucks being a sponsor sometimes, because everyone misinterprets your intentions. If you do not understand some of the humor on RBW, you obviously need to be saved. ![]()
