I do it to learn more about rebreathers.
2. I think I can learn more about how RBs can kill me than on courses.
3. No existing rebreather does what I want so I have to start from scratch
4. I believe the best route is to modify an existing rebreather
5. Rebreathers alone are not risky enough so I want one that has just one O2 sensor
6. I want to design and sell a great rebreather to make money
7. Risk analysis has never been my forte
8. I´m skint

I picked option 2 since there isn't really just one reason. I guess I'm a tinkerer at heart.

You left out the option:

"I'm a bit short of cash to purchase one right now, but if I build one, I can defray the cost over a longer time span, have the experience and understanding that comes from hands on working, and also learn a lot more about Rebreather's and what I want and don't want in the process".


Or perhaps I'm the only one who'd pick that option.

How about because making stuff is fun/challenging (as DrMike rightly said) plus, the prices on most Rebreather units are plain ridiculous considering the ROI .

At the moment, I am diving a KISSed IDA71 that has turned out to be a very sturdy and stable rig. The only drawback is the lack of a water trap . This is no real concern for the type of diving I do with it (air dil, no overhead). I can bail out on OC at any time.

The whole project cost me just over 2k Euro.

Yes I would go for a mixture of - cos I can / as its fun, personally I have been keeping an eye out for a 15.5 to do up as a winter project.

I am an ex engenear and if I still had access to the lathes, milling macheens and jig boorers I used to i would have built one or seriously modified my one by now.

I agree with Phi. I can't speak for the Mk15.5 but for homebuilding in general. I was a committed homebuilder, thinking I could build something as good as a KISS from scratch. I've wasted the cost of the KISS, a VR3 and probably a Hammerhead trying to do it. I also damn near killed myself in the process.

Unless you really know engineering, have access to a good workshop and don't mind spending more time tinkering than diving then I really wouldn't bother. I learned my lesson, bit the bullet and bought a KISS. Finally, ask yourself do you trust your own engineering ability to support your life? And maybe the life of someone else who might have to get you out of the poo?

On the plus side I do know my way around a rebreather and it was damn good fun but it was a total money pit.

How about an "I didn't know any better" option? That was the one that applied to me.

Please don't take this as a criticism of homebuilding, there are some excellent homebuilds out there. But if you want to dive regularly and more importantly, today then go out and buy one.
