Dirty rumor...

I'd read a while ago (perhaps one of Mr. Suttons musings?) that the chemical reaction could be jump started with a shot of CO2, say from a CO2 powerlet. Will this work or just over power the scrubber bed I don't know. Just a thought....

i would like to know a bit more on the issue, but it seems that there is some sort of hijack here. maybe is someone splits the thread, then i would want to hear it from the very experts on this. you can see that there is a variety of opinions on the matter...

Thanks

That sounds very very dangerous. Sure the scrubber will probably jumpstart. A friend of mine and I blew some 100% CO2 over a small beaker full of sorb some years ago. As predicted the thing got very very hot fast. Far hotter than normal scrubber temps.

Its not something new. Some russian and other chemical Rebreather's sometimes use an chemical initiator that produces a pulse of CO2 to get the scrubber/O2 generator going (like in some KO2 based systems).

But I would never consider this for a homebuild (at least not seriously, perhaps for the fun of it). How do you know when its safe to breath from such a thing? How much scrubber life was consumed by the extra CO2? How does the absorbtion profile look? Did it increase the risk for early breakthrough?

Actually KO2 oxygen rebreathers use chlorate candle to initiate the reaction which produces O2 not CO2.

Yes, sometimes. But...there are also other systems that actually make CO2 to get things going. Have had a russian manual describing such a system translated for me. If I recall correctly the CO2 generators was pretty straight forward. A striking pin breaking a container of acid that flows into some carbonate salt giving off CO2 very fast.

You want to get rid of Co2, not add it to the loop. Just go semi closed for a while.
