Jumbo-D O2 cylinder EMS with rethreaded scuba valve

Do you think that rethreading a scuba cyl. valve to fit a jumbo-d medical o2 cyl. would work? Said cylinder holds 17cu in. @ 2215 5.3 inch dia., 13.3 inches long.

Re: Jumbo-D O2 cylinder EMS with rethreaded scuba valve

It's been done, but the issue is holding the valve in a lathe chuck... they are irregularly shaped and are almost impossiblr to true-up, even with a 4 jaw chuck and best efforts. Easier to just get a proper cylinder.

Re: Jumbo-D O2 cylinder EMS with rethreaded scuba valve

I presume you're asking the question because you already have said Cylinder?

If not forget it - Buy the proper thing...

BUT if so, there are a few places that sell valves - I think I saw some DIN valves in small taper at underwater france

Robinet DIN petit cône - Robinets - Robinetterie et accessoires

Or are you thinking the modern Aluminium ones with parallel threads?

Re: Jumbo-D O2 cylinder EMS with rethreaded scuba valve

yep have a couple, thanks for the input and info. Not all ems o2 cylinders have a tapered thread.

Hello,

Such valves can be easily found on Ebay.de for almost nothing. Look for kk valves or klein konisch.
Or just ring Martin at tecme.de, I'm sure he has new valves to sell for a better price than Underwater France.

Re: Jumbo-D O2 cylinder EMS with rethreaded scuba valve

Since he's in New York, I am *certain* that he has a parallel thread, 5/8 inch, O-Ring sealed cylinder.

The USA abandoned tapered threads in these cylinders 20+ years ago, and even then it was 1/2 NPT, not Kleinkonish as is used in Europe.

The only SCUBA valves I have ever seen in 5/8 straight thread were on the Feino, because they purchased Luxfer medical cylinders for the rigs.

Re: Jumbo-D O2 cylinder EMS with rethreaded scuba valve

The thread on modern US aluminum medical O2 bottles is 0.750-16 UNF-2B, standard 3/4 fine thread like a bolt. There are a few scuba valves in this thread out there - older steel Survivair escape bottles use this thread, but the bottles make such nice argon bottles (and homebuilt rebreather bottles!) that it's a shame to rob the valves. If I'm not mistaken there were some steel 72 cf scuba tanks years ago that used this thread - White Stag maybe? - so there are some J (and maybe K) valves floating around out there in the used gear market. Standard pin-indexed O2 valves (I can't remember the CGA number) can be re-machined to scuba inlet profile (also has a CGA name / number - breathing air for human consumption or some such) by anybody who happens to have a CNC mill. Still not much good, since most O2 valves don't have a knob, except the ones from Biomarine such as on the composite O2 cylinder on the BP-240.
Bottom line - it's a lot easier to use a scuba bottle.

I tried to look at Joel's site to see what he's got in stock - scuba tanks or oddball valves? - but the site seems to be down. Anybody know what's up with TDL?
