Opening a DS4

I've just received a blanking plug for my Apeks DS4 1st stage. Before I operate with a hammer and chisel, how does one open it and insert the blankings plug? I'm assuming that the chrome ring with the semi-transparent soft end is removed (somehow). Does it go back on after the blanking plug is installed?

Hank

Re: Opening a DS4

Pin spanner, I think it is either 40 or 42mm.

Hank,

How far are you from Dive Tech in Mallorytown? The boys will look after you there.

Cheers

Re: Opening a DS4

Use ring spanner to remove the top chromed ring. Remove the environmental seal. Put the delrin plug inplace and tighten up the ring again. There is supposed to be a radial oring sealing between the plug and wall of the DS4 so no mega torque needed.

Great link the important parts for Hank are below
-Get a 7/16 bolt into the port of the DS4 so you can clamp it in a vice
-Remove with a pin wrench(spanner) or I've been able to do it with a rubber strap that allows me to grip the chrome top

Re: Opening a DS4

Hank,

Practical advice:

Screw a C02 cartridge into one of the LP ports (a used one is better but a full one works).

Gently clamp the "part that needs to come off" in a vise.

Use the C02 cartridge as a handle and unthread the darned thing.

You'll remove the existing crap (diaphragm, plastic bit, and pin) and install the plug.

I screw the "part that needs to go back on" on hand-tight. Remove it now and then and wash out the salt that will get into the regulator. Yes, I *know* it's supposed to stay dry... but after a year it will be wet.
