| Of Baby oil and candle wax... HI Guys This is maybe not the correct forum on which to ask, but it seems that we Rebreather homebuilder divers are always experimenting with new and not so new methodology to do things. I hope that you guys can help with info, as I am sure the answers will be pertinent in some of our Rebreather projects.. I have a bit of a project that I am working on and have been following the discussions on using Mineral oil or Baby oil (for us that want to smell nice and fresh, or that can't get a ready supply of Mineral oil....) in PPO2 handsets and found it very interresting. I have two questions relating to the above, and I hope somebody can help me.. Question 1 I want to use combined methods suggested in other posts, where I want to pot 95% my modified Maglite lighthead (botom part) in Candle wax (parafin wax), to ensure that the baby oil does not get "sucked" through the cable to the battery cannister, and and fill the rest of the lighthead (the area around and behind the lens) with Baby oil, so the LED light(s) do not lose any effectiveness, and can still be dived to depth, without fear of implosion or leaking at depth. We are planning to do a 100m dive next year, and I want to start preparing all my equipment for the dives.. Does anybody know of the baby oil or mineral oil will desolve the candle wax or have any negative effect on the system I want to use ? Question 2 Will Sealed Lead Acid batteries work in baby oil or mineral oil, as the next option will be to fill both the modified maglite and the battery cannister with Baby oil to prevent leakage or pressure damage. | Re: Of Baby oil and candle wax... lead acid batteries will work in mineral oil they used this system with alvin the sub. but why if you are going for extreame depths and worried about imploding the housing just use some thick walled ss tubing and triclover clamps for the covers it is rated for pressures up to 600 psi in the larger sizes. and precharge the housings with nitrogen. this solves the battery go boom problem to. and molded cord sets can be had for 100.00 dollars that are good for 1000 ft . rick |
