Question Gluing delrin?

Does anyone know of any good adhesives that will glue delrin please? I'm sure someone mentioned it on here a while back but can't find it.

This will be belt-and-braces to some screws. Hoping it will seal and add strength.

TIA!

Re: Gluing delrin?

The other trade name of Delrin is acetal homopolymer. As far as I know there are adhesives that will bond Delrin, but they tend to be expensive and the bond is only mechanical. See the excerpt from the Wikipedia article on Delrin below for details.

From Wikipedia:

"Bonding

Acetal polymers are typically very difficult to bond. Special processes and treatments have been developed to improve bonding of acetal. Typically these processes involve surface etching, flame treatment or mechanical abrasion. Typical etching processes involve chromic acid at elevated temperatures. Dupont has a patented process for treating acetal homopolymer called satinizing which creates anchor points on the surface which give that adhesive something to grab. There are also processes involving oxygen plasma and corona discharge[1].
Once the surface is prepared a number of adhesives can be used for bonding. These include epoxies, polyurethanes, and cyanoacrylates. Epoxies have shown 150-500 psi shear strength on mechanically abraded surfaces and 500-1000 psi on chemically treated surfaces (500psi approx 3,4MPa). Cyanoacrylates are useful for bonding to metal, leather, rubber and other plastics.
Solvent welding is typically unsuccessful on acetal polymers due to the excellent solvent resistance of acetal. Thermal welding through various methods have been used successfully on both homopolymer and copolymer."

Good luck,

Jay

Also from my bible (Mcmaster Carr):
Epoxy for Difficult-to-Bond Plastics Use these two-part (resin and hardener) adhesives on polyethylene (UHMW, HDPE, and LDPE), nylon (all blends and glass filled), acetal (Delrin), PPS (polyphenylene sulfide, Ryton, Konduit), polypropylene, PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), PEEK, ABS, PVC, PET (Ertylite, Petlon, Petra, Mylar, Dacron polyester), ETFE, PVCF, PVDF (Kynar), ECTFE (Halar), fiberglass (FRP), polyimide materials (Ultem, Torlon, Imidex, Pyropel, Vespel, and Kapton), neoprene, EPDM, butyl rubber, urethane, glass, metal, and concrete. Mix ratio is 2:1. Begins to harden in 45 minutes; reaches full strength in 24 hours. The 1.7-oz. cartridge will cover approx. 3 sq. ft; the 1.5-qt. can will cover approx. 75 sq. ft. Color is amber. Temp. range is -40° to +350° F. To dispense the 1.7-oz. cartridges, use the applicator gun (sold separately). To mix the adhesive as you dispense, attach a mixer nozzle (sold separately). Full package is 12.
Epoxy adhesives (also known as Bondit B45TH) require minimal surface preparation. It's flexible and resists temperature extremes, chemicals, and impact. Encasing (potting) compound (also known as Bondit B45) is a thinner version of the epoxy. Use on all materials listed or use as a clear protective coating. It resists moisture and seawater and is an alternative to castable polyurethanes when encasing (potting) electrical cables, connectors, and transducer terminations.

That is about the most succinct response you could ask for, and the most accurate.

Re: Gluing delrin?

Thanks all!

Brent (Divetheworld) has kindly offered to help me attach the bit, so the job will be done properly by a grown-up (no chewing gum or bailer twine this time). Rather than gluing, he suggested a gasket which will seal and give shock absorption. The screws should be enough to hold it on, so belt-and-braces not needed.

Many thanks for the suggestions!

PS Dave, here in the UK there is actually an adhesive product called "sticks like sh*t". I guess it does exactly what it says on the tin!
