Darn....

Now we're making it so easy that never mind not needing to figure it out themselves, they don't even need to use GOOGLE well. Well, at least we still have the mud and the 1 mile rebreather swim to sort out the boys from the, err.... boys.

What is this world coming to. Pretty soon even the hotel pool lifeguards will no longer pitch a fit when they see a body unmoving on the bottom of the pool without any bubbles coming out.

Re: Disposable O2 Bottle Manual Add Valve Contest?

i just came in from the garage, and have finished the simplest manual add valve i could come up with. i will post pics tommorrow after the epoxy finishes drying.

i figured that i might as wel l put my own design up and see what you guys think of it. built with basic tools that most people would have around their home, and can be built entirely with a dremel if someone was inclined. basic cost off the top of my head.. about $20 or so.

i havent looked at Dr. Bob's writeup yet. but will do so now right before i crash. thanks for bugging him about it Tom! ill be sure to send him an email and a $20 bill.

$20 is for the *entire rebreather* including the 02 bottle, right?
(It can be done...)

Looking forward to the photos.

Absolutely!

That's why I've got 2 !!!!!!!!!

(The second is for bailout if the primary lathe floods, err, breaks down mid project. South Bends Rock! )

hi Dave!

sadly not this time... i know it can be done. id caught your post about your womens undergarment rebreather parts, thought it was great! my own thoughts on a simular setup was a pendulum using a MC tube hoseclamped onto a scrubber made from salvaged, scrap, or a $2 peice of 4" ABS/PVC pipe, the reduced at the top as close to the scrubber as possible, either with a bushing, or another peice of MC tube then wadded up and hoseclamped to a reducer bushing to end up witha 3/4" nub to mount the mouthpeice on, or dive as is. concern with that basic idea though is having too much space above the scrubber for CO2build up.
i believe Bill has his pendulum costs down to $30 or so, wich is pretty awesome for such a "not so basic" rig as his.

pictures to come in a bit.. gotta get wife and kid going, and then out to the garage to take a couple pics.. one of the thing disassembled in peices, and one of it mounted on an empty O2 bottle.

while im typing though.. a bit on what ive discovered while trying to make this manual add button.
first i thought i could use stick epoxy and make myself a threaded bushing with that, so that i could epoxy that into a peice of pipe, and build the valve off that. i found out after a couple attempts that 1 Carbuna wax really does make an AWESOME release agent! alittle too good.. couldnt get the epoxy to hold around the threads well enough to do anything.. not even when trying to force it into the threads with a peice of pipe or clamp. just wouldnt work for me. i also found out that after removing the carnuba wax, that when i reapplied the epoxy.. it stuck alot better.. but the threads on the bottle are too shallow and fine to make a suitable threaded bushing that way. so that was out.

i looked at the gas fittings at the local hardware store.. nothing left hand thread... looked for a tap that might be "close"... nothing left hand thread.. and taps that size arent cheap anyways... didnt try a gas supplier though... i also eyeballed one of the mapp/O2 kits again... wrote it off as too much money for what it is at this point in time... and figured lowtech is best for what i want to accomplish.. a MAV that is built entirely from off the shelf easily cound and constructed parts, with minimal tools, that ANYONE can put together.

so thats what i spent a "few" hours working on and tinkering with last night and ive got something now that seems to work pretty well. its only dry tested.. hasnt been lubed with Cristolube yet, and until i dig out my can of it.. wont be wet tested.. unless maybe i just use some USP Glycerin or something else. ahh hell. ill wet test it for an hour or so in a bucket of water later on today... anyhows.. im off to take pictures...

Never needs to be. 02 at low pressure in a reducing regulator never needs to be 02 cleaned. It's getting cooler there, not hotter.....

Stick the photos here!

Re: Disposable O2 Bottle Manual Add Valve Contest?

hope this works...

first pic is of the valve and its parts totally disassembled, well as much as possible.. i forgot to include the return spring in this pic though. it appears in the following pic.

second pic is of the valve assembled, and ready to be mounted on the cylinder, the return spring is present now.

third pic is of the valve mounted to the cylinder and ready to go.

i call this valve the HDT MAV... Hillbilly Death Trap Manual Add Valve.... name subject to change.
so far it meets my needs and criteria for a simple MAV that ANYONE can build from 100% off the shelf parts. without the need fo expensive tools, or any special parts. ALL parts were bought from my local hardware store in one visit, and they had plenty available. i feel that anyone anywhere could build one of these valves for their short shallow needs and recreational fun..
i will tally up a cost of materials later off the receipt.
if anyone wants/needs a total parts name breakdown and list... i will give you the names off the packages.
if theres any questions or suggestions.. please fire away!

sooooooooooo what do you think?

Yankee Rebel

p.s. it still hasnt been wet tested yet.. i may have to make the seal alittle snugger to be water tight.. last night i think i fit it alittle too lose instead of leaving well enough alone after my first "fitting" to the shaft.

EDITED TO ADD:
WET TEST RESULTS
TIED CONDOM ON NOZZLE AND SECURED WITH JUDICOUS APPLICATION OF ELECTRICAL TAPE. INFLATED CONDOM AND SUMBERGED VALVE INTO SINK FULL OF WATER.. VALVE LEAKS O2 (slight?) WHERE STEM GOES THRU CAP. WILL MAKE NEW SEAL AND RETEST TOMMORROW.
AMOUNT OF O2 LOSS IS NOT HUGE, BUT IS ENOUGH TO BE UNACCEPTABLE.

CHANGED A COUPLE THINGS ALREADY. ORIGINALLY USED PEICES OF INNERTUBE FOR GASKETS AND SEALS ON OUTSIDE OF VALVE, AND ON CYLINDER THREADS. I CHANGED THIS TO GOOD OLD ELECTRICAL TAPE. EASIER TO WORK WITH, AND IF IT GETS CUT.. JUST PULL OFF A COUPLE WRAPS AND WRAP AGAIN. I ALSO WRAPPED THE OUTSIDE OF THE VALVE WHERE IT GOES OVER CYLINDER THREADS WITH ELECTRICAL TAPE PRIOR TO ADDING HOSECLAMP. I FELT THIS WOULD ELIMINATE A POTENTIAL LEAK DUE TO 4 CUTS IN THE LOWER BODY TO ALLOW A HOSE CLAMP TO SLIGHTLY "CLAMP" IT DOWN AROUND THE TAPE NOT SEALING PROPERLY.

CAPS USED TO DIFFERENTIAT BETWEEN ORIGINAL AND EDITED POSTS.
