| Re: Ventilation Fan in Loop For the Arawak, the big umbilical was its "frozen chicken". Pulling an umbilical for straight surface supply is hard enough, but with the hoses for the Arawak on it as well, was too much. That's an understatement. I can see that you have seen one.... . Imagine dragging a triple fire hose thru the hatch... hot water hose and all. And no room to stow it in the SDC either. Just a miserable thing. But the helmet was pretty, was it not? We must have mutual friends someplace. Teeth and all..... Dave

Just a miserable thing. But the helmet was pretty, was it not? The hoses to the counterlungs from the bell on the Arawak were much smaller than the breathing hose, but you are spot on in terms of the umbilical being a mega size fire hose. The umbilical size is the main reason for the commercial diving project we are doing, with a rebreather, to get it down to something small enough to lug and stow. There was a picture we were allowed to use on the DEMA stand of this problem, courtesy of Technip Norge AS and StatOil who are striving to improve the safety for the diver as well as make him more efficient - less time handling equipment, more time working. That picture reproduced again below is a sat diving umbilical with the big brother of the Arawak (conventional gas reclaim system). The rebreather as primary can get this down to a 24mm hose. The Arawak helmet is really quite interesting. We looked at it before, but after your post wondered about the front lever for the work we are doing. The latches on the Arawak hat are very similar to those we are doing for the XDH, but at the moment operate independently on each side so the handle does not go around the front. When doing anything new, it is good to stand on the shoulders of others. Also called not reinvent wheels. Thanks for reminding us to go and have another look at that handle.
