Herbert Cooper rubber breathing hoses

I just replaced the flimsy EPDM hoses on my Mark 15.5 with the same hoses used on Boris, ordered direct from Herbert Cooper. Expensive, yes, but what an upgrade!!

In today's 200 minute dive, I noticed reduced work of breathing (metal reinforcement prevents collapse), MUCH less condensation (insulated), and best of all, the comfort in knowing that an accidental brush with a sharp object won't flood my loop (heavy duty fabric).

FYI, Herbert Cooper Company is definitely old school, which makes sense considering the part of the country they are in. I doubt if there are many traffic lights in Genesee, PA. Once out of the three times that I called, I spoke to a Mr. Cooper himself. It sounded like they wouldn't be putting up a web site any time soon. They would not take my order over the phone (I had to fax them a written purchase order) and they delivered them via UPS C.O.D. almost two weeks later. Well worth it.

I would think that the same length would work for the KISS, etc, as long as the ends could be adapted.

Herbert Cooper Co.
121 Main St., Genesee PA 16923, United States
ph. (814)228-3417
fx. (814)228-3500
Boris hose part number is: HC215-24-22

I supposedly ordered the last three they had in stock, at $54.41 each plus shipping, but by now they should have cured some more. Herbert Cooper says that they are "not recommended for underwater use", but I think that is a liability paranoia thing typical in a country with more attorneys than stray cats. These are definitely milspec quality, and were CE approved on the Boris.

What are you using as adaptors onthe hose ends?

GOOD question. Though they fit the PRISM DSV side perfectly, they did not fit exactly on the center section side...the diameter of the hoses was a bit too big. At first I was a bit concerned. I would hate for one to slide off and blow my loop! So I cranked down the hose clamp and then tested it by pulling on it firmly. Didn't budge. Below in the closeup you can see that there was some slight "frumping" of the rubber. Still, I think an adaptor would be in order. If it was snug without the hose clamp then the hose clamp wouldn't be a single point of failure. Any suggestions?

The only adaptors I have seen are John Dekker's Rig here:
http://www.therebreathersite.nl/biomarine_mk15.htm

I believe he had to pay a very exorbant sum to have them made...
"180 euro for the adaptors and 220 euro for the hoses".

I think I might be able to find a machine shop that could make some for less than that... I will let you know if I do!

BTW, I have a 15, so If I find a place I would need to know the size of the 15.5 canister hose conns... looks like their fairly close though.

The price you paid for the hoses is VERY NICE!

Hello Andrew, I thought about this for my Prism and it seems to me that they'd only be usable for the Head-CL part of the loop. I think they'd be way too stiff for the CL-DSV section. But it's the Head-CL hoses I worry about snagging anyway, as I can't see them. And it's certainly cheaper than having to use them for the whole loop. -Andy

Re: Herbert Cooper rubber breathing hoses

Excusing my ignorance Andy,
but are the Insiration / Prism hoses the same ID and the same size as these hoses?

I'm paranoid about all the hoses!

For the PRISM DSV, they are the same diameter (as I used PRISM hoses ever since I bought my Mark 15.5 from Steam Machines). Not sure about the length or the connecton on the center section. Are the PRISM hoses cut to length for the PRISM as they were on my Mark 15.5?

You definitely could not cut the Herbert Cooper hoses to length. You would have to order the right size from Herbert Cooper. Now I am wondering if they can custom-make the ends to size. I think they aim to please, in any case. See the fax regarding underwater suitability below:
