RHIB diving and the VR3 with 4th cell.

Yesterday I did my first dive from a RHIB with the Beanie 4th cell connected to the VR3. Hardboats aren't a problem, everything comes up the lift or ladder. Diving off the RHIB I wasn't going to hand my unit in with the VR3 dangling and I didn't want to leave the cable dangling while I dekitted in the sea. I decided to disconnect and wash the connectors out when I got home.

What do you do? And don't say don't dive off RHIB's, I have one and that's what I do. Is there a better option?

Re: RHIB diving and the VR3 with 4th cell.

I use an explorer not a VR3 but its the same issue. I always leave the computer connected for the duration of a diving trip, 1 day or 3 weeks. Too much risk of salt water in the connector otherwise.

When taking the unit off in the water the first thing I do is take the computer off and put it on the loop hose.

Re: RHIB diving and the VR3 with 4th cell.

i leave my VR3 connected. when the guys haul my gear up over the side, i hold the displays/VR3 so that they don't get flung around or caught under the gear. The guys i dive with are all Rebreather savvy if not RB divers themselves so they take good care of gear.

Re: RHIB diving and the VR3 with 4th cell.

Rach, I was looking at that on Sat, as I was dragging your gear out of the water, and wondered why you didn't just clip the VR3 off to a D-Ring, loop hose, etc etc etc... In fact, as soon as I had your rig on the side of the boat, and you handed up the VR3, I clipped it off to a D-Ring. Just do that in the water, and it won't be dangling.

yes its a habit to get into. have only just got used to taking it off before handing the rest of the gear up and not finding myself still attached to the Rebreather!

Re: RHIB diving and the VR3 with 4th cell.

I use the same system for my VR3.
I clip it, and the handsets, off to a chest D ring as I de-kit in the water.
What do the vision people do, as I imagine they are in a similar situation.
Change the standard clips to big brass clips. you can still clip the hand sets together, and also to a choice of D rings!

Re: RHIB diving and the VR3 with 4th cell.

Ditto to most of the above.

Clip it to a D ring. I used to disconnect it and leave it on my wrist, then it all went FUBAR. Water in the connection caused it to show 0.14 then 0.98 in the same minute. Cant trust it as far as I can swallow it once disconnected in salty stuff.

Re: RHIB diving and the VR3 with 4th cell.

I've taken to replacing the wrist straps with a loop of rubber surgical tubing that slips over my wrist as a strap when desired. On the surgical tube I also attach a small brass snap as well. This way I can slip it off the wrist and snap it onto a D ring at any moment I choose. I do it in the boat as a routine, and often have it already snapped to a chest D ring while I am on deco. The surgitube allows me to pull it out far enough to read it even when on the D ring. If I need to thrust my arm into a hole while wreck diving I can slip it off and snap it on the D ring even on the bottom. This makes the entire thing easier to deal with. Instant on/off the wrist, compensates for drysuit expansion, allows me to slide it up the arm if needed and down to the wrist when I desire, secure, works great on the chest D ring for protection on the boat, etc. Just seems to be the best way possible. If I am doing a serious dive where I am watching time like a hawk, I actually wear the VR-3 on the back of my hand.... rubber over the large part of the hand but not over the thumb. Try it.

BTW, I use surgitube for all of my wrist worn stuff, IE: Mark-15 primary display, etc. I've gotten into the water MANY TIMES in advance of divers who are asking the boat mates for help strapping on their crap. I just slip it over my wrist and jump in....

Answer is a huge self imposed tax on stupidity. Porsche folks will get it....
