Hi Steve,

Depends on what you want to do really, I belive the smallest and lightest unit generally on the market is the Sports Kiss - however, realistically you wont want to go deeper than 40 metres with it (though people do dive deeper with them - notably the man-fish Phi ). I know others who use them who saw they swim great. But many parts are moulded and not as robust as other units out there. If you're looking at going into wrecks with it you may want to do some modification. You can get the whole unit (less tanks) into a daysack and take it as carry on luggage. Kiss also makes the classic kiss which is machined, not much heavier than the Sporty, robust and more capable for all but the most insane dives - it has a good scrubber but the unit islef could be hard to fit into standard hand luggage. It has backmounted counterlungs (there are pros and cons about this so I won't open up a can of worms!)

More capable units incude the APD Evolution with integrated decompression. However it is not a modular syatem meaning that you might have problems getting hold of cylinders at your destination as it takes 2 litre cylinders. This, however , can be overcome by buying an aftermarket frame allowing you to fit other cylinders. This could also be said of the Inspiration. I have used a number of aftermarket frames for an inspiration which does make it easier to travel with.

When I dive I tend to travel abroad with my rebreather. I sold a classic inspiration and a Sports Kiss to buy a Megalodon which suits me perfectly. The unit itself is very capable - able to do 200 metre (700 feet) dives with minor alterantion (I've not taken it this deep I should point out!). The unit is recognized as one of the most robust units out there. It is a modular system allowing you to use whatever cylinders are available at your arrival. Though one of the heavier units it can be stripped down and carried (mostly) as hand luggage. There is a smaller version called the Mini Meg with a shorter scubber duration, but some people are now making radial scrubbers for them meaning you can buy a 7lb scubber that fits in a very compact.

So there you are. Most units can be fettled and all have their pros and cons. Just looking at the weights of units can bely how suitable they are for travelling as many units can be altered. There are many other considerations out there that should steer you towards making the right choice. I chose the Meg as it suited me and my type of diving. Saying that i travelled with my Inspiration all around the world and it never disappointed me. I know people who travel with a Sports Kiss but usually dive a Meg.

I'm sure you'll get some excellent advice but would be wary of anyone that says 'i dive X unit and everything else is crXp'

Best of luck in your choice

Nick

hello steve,

the prototype of the 'mini rEvo' already exists

including 2 liter tanks (steel), including harnas and wing, having the same scrubber as the standard rEvo, titanium housing: 20.5 kg! (steel housing 23 kg)

(and if you use carbon 2 liter tanks (!!! not approved for diving :-(), the total weight is 17.3 kg ...)

And you can use it to 80 meters without problems

... and if you want, you can always put 3 liter tanks on it, without changing anything!

regards
paul

Well, Steve, our Stingray unit is pretty darn close to the smallest (and most streamlined) unit around. It's just 44 pounds loaded up and ready to dive.

cheers...

Re: portability

You might want to check out the new Dive Rite Optima FX.
When I looked at it at DEMA it looked pretty compact!
