o2 fire

lure has asked about my major o2 fire that i had, so i thought that i would post what happened. Build "death trap one" the first home built rebreather that i built. it used mk20 reg for the o2 side, o2 cleaned and a used spg for tank pressure. I had been bench testing it for about one week when the thing caught on fire in the garage. Throw it out of the garage and call the fire dept. Needless to say there was not a lot to look at after the fire. So what caused the fire. It is my belief that burrs on the piping caused the heating to ignition point, and initiated the fire. My fault. Secondary cause could have been spg contamiation. So how do we avoied this in the future?

Use only o2 compatable regs.
spg are to assumed to contaniated, if not new and certified
deburr a piping
and all homebuilts should be tested in to back forty, for saftey

i currently have a set of fire fighter turnouts, just for testing.

hello rick,

did the ignition take place when you openend the valve??
if so, did you open the valve quickly or slow?

regards
paul

Re: o2 fire

I've heard you will be warmer while using a rebreather, but that is just ridiculous.

Re: o2 fire

I lost the pics years ago but i think the only thing that went through my mind was there goes the deposit on this place. cleaner was simple green i have never had a problem since so? It happened upon tank opening but i always just crack the valve. Had the cover on it so i could never determine the start location. I suspect due to the remote spg and ss piping the problem has there. which is why i don't use used hoses or used spgs anymore.
