Anyone using OceanReef FFM?

Hey all,

I did see some posts on people using the Ocean Reef Neptune FFM... Are you guys using both ports? (ie two regs) when you dive? If so has anyone used ScubaPro S600 with this mask either in primary or secondary port config... yes I know that some do not like the mask, but be it as it may please let me know...

Thanks

P.S. Anyone taught themselves to use it? (ie w/o class training?)

Re: Anyone using OceanReef FFM?

I use a Neptune on and off. It works great for OC diving, with or without a reg in the octo port. It does not convert for CCR use...at least not with a simply disassembly or with any factory produced kits.

I have also dived the Scubapro mask...like it alot..has a large skirt which is great for over a dryhood, but doesnt fit well with thin faces. This does easily work with a CCR, as you simply fit the DSV through the mouthpiece opening.

as for training...never been 'trained' on a ffm..been diving hardhat and ffm's work work for years. just time in the water and having a well rehearsed bailout plan in mind should $#!T his the fan. Normally speaking, these are a safer bet than a seperate reg and mask

Re: Anyone using OceanReef FFM?

I have an ocean reef mask, brought it never used it!!! It kept flooding and was a pain to equalise!

I dont think it is designed to be used with a ccr and I wouldnt want to try it either!

I ended up buying the poseidon FFM instead, much better mask but, again, not designed to be used with a ccr

dont know if that helps

Re: Anyone using OceanReef FFM?

Hi, What OceanReef mask do you have? Is it the Neptune II? I started with the Neptune II and it worked well for me, after that I got the Neptune space, now I'm using the Preditor. It works like a dream.

I've never used a rebreather with the OceanReef masks, of course, I thought I would give out this information to you. Don't know if this will help you but I thought I would just give you the info.

It's down below.

I'm working on my own rebreather system that willmake it easier for me to get deeper.

Safe diving Matt

NEPTUNE II NIRA with
REBREATHER
The Neptune II mask and even the Neptune II NIRA may be used
with rebreather. The attached picture rappresent the application
of the Neptune II NIRA with a rebreather for military appliaction by
Italian CONSUBIM (Italian Special Forces) Neptune II configuration
allows the application of a rebreather, however due to the differ-
ent models available in the market each one must be connected to
the mask by different ways. The 4 ports available in the mask (the
2 sides, the front and the botton) allows to apply the In and OUT
hoses from and to the rebreather and have additional ports for the
communication unit or for special adapters.

I used to dive one some years ago, but always with separated second reg.
I had a rush flood once and thanks the separated reg I'm still here!
Then I sold it.
I don't know how is is now the evolution of the product but never heard about rebreather compatibility.

Hope this help.

Nad

Re: Anyone using OceanReef FFM?

The Ocean Reef, like most other FFMs, can be modified for Rebreather use. Steam Machines used to have pictures of it (and the Scubapro) on their website.

IMHO the mask is below the competitions standard, both in design and quality.
The NIRA 2nd stage isn't much better. Wouldn't dive it of it came for free.

If you like this general mask layout, get either a Dräger Nova R (as in Rebreather) which also has triple ports but better build quality and set up for Rebreather use, or an Interspiro Diveator MK II (AGA mask) and modify it for RB use (and has been used in such fashion for years by the military).

Another mask of like design is the Poseidon, though I've only had a cursory look at it once and never used it.

Re: Anyone using OceanReef FFM?

I have used the NIRA II many times for OC but wouldn;t think of using it for a Rebreather there are better alternatives..

My normal use for the mask is to bring it with me on trips where a chamber is not convenient so that I could do IWR if necessary.. I also use the mask when I have big dives with extended use of oxygen to reduce the risks associated with using oxygen beyond normal exposures..

Re: Anyone using OceanReef FFM?

I have bought the mask for OC diving, I should of explained that in the beginning. What reg are you using with the mask? I love my MK25/S600 would love to use it with the mask I want to make sure I have the best breathing performance I can get... did you use anything but NIRA with it?

NAD, what did you mean by second reg? ie as in spare reg hanging around your neck or two regs in the mask?

MPJScuba, yes I have the NIRA 2 let me know how your experience was... btw did you get any training and what regulator did you use (ie NIRA or something else)... let me know of any tips...

I am planning to use this for OC only.

thanks

You have the possibility to mount a second reg on the right side of the mask, but I find better to have a separated reg for the reason I told you before.
