| Proper Boffin ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | I think... If we're gonna start immitating fish, then we forget about trying to make something to enable us to "breathe" underwater, but go straight to the end reason for breathing - oxygenation of the blood and removal of CO2. In air breathing animals we have lungs to facilitate gaseous exchange, in fish they have gills, but both are doing the same job, extracting O2 from the surrounding environment and returning the waste gasses (I'm assuming here that gills put CO2 back into the water) So if looking for an underwater solution, why not forget about the gas phase, and invent some sort of intravenous system that oxyenates the blood, and filters out the CO2, something like a dialysis machine, I'm imagining, only smaller. Unborn babies don't breathe air as such, so perhaps we could fit a plug in our belly buttons (Matrix style) and you hook up to the "unit" via that! Considering that babies are connected this way, and they must do it too, you'll never need a pee valve again either. OK, time to get back to reality!!! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Quote: (Originally Posted by dive2dive2000) Hi Group, There's been a lot of discussion on this as to how impractical it is. For one thing the centrifuge will have a considerable gyroscopic effect thus the dive will be unable to swim in anything but a straight line. Secondly, no matter what method is used to extract the oxygen or air from the water, there is the massive amount of water that needs to be processed just to provide enough for the diver's metabolism. You would also end up with a nitrox mix since oxygen is more soluble in water than nitrogen. A school epxeriment that I remember is to boil aerated water and collect the gas released in a bell jar - it is high enough in O2 to relight a glowing splint (the test for O2). Not pure O2 but I would guess at least 50%.I was sent this from rebreather mailing list, now this is really the dark side. http://www.isracast.com/tech_news/310505_tech.htm Martin The bottom line is that if this method was at all possible, the military would use it in submarines and stuff. Instead, they use electrolysis. Go figure. |

![]() | Guys, I think there is nothing to make fun about. Remember the first diving took place in diving bells and metal helmets. Again, the Israelis are very military minded so this could already be operating in military hands. The rebreathers we dive today and boast about, is history for the military. Joseph |
