![]() | Rebreathers Sharks Hello all I am completely new to rebreathers, having jsut ordered my evolution and will be doing the training in the new year. While builidng up to convincing myself to spend the money and get a rebreather I have spent time talking to everybody I can about rebreathers to glean as much info as possible (why I didn't discover this site sooner is a mystery but there you go) While scuba diving in South Aftrica on a recent holiday I got chatting to some lads from Cape Town who mentioned that there are some inpiration divers in Cape Town but that they can't use the electronics on the units down there because the soleniods (or some other part of hte electronics) give out electronic pulses that attract Sharks. Being in Cape Town this was too big a risk due to the Great Whites. At the time I took this as an ammusing anecdote and thought nothing more of it. However, there is a good chance I will be moving to Perth where there are (I believe) great whites therefore I have to ask: I know it sounds far fetch, and I am quite happy to believe I am being wound up, but is there any truth in this story or are you no more at risk from atracting sharks with an Evolution? Look froward to hearing from you all. And rest assured, even if there is an increased risk it won't stop my conversion to rebreathers, it just means the wife will increase the life insurance cover ![]() "Still bubbling for now" |

![]() ![]() | Re: Rebreathers Sharks Hi there Its an interesting question that. No question of the magnetic field around you as a result of using an eCCR. However they have been used many times around other sharks. Bubbles tend to scare away sharks so they are more likely to come closer because your on closed circuit. But any footage you see of sharks underwater has been taken using a camera that generates a much bigger magnetic field than the control in the rebreather. OK so lots of people use cages but many film crews dont depending on the type of footage they are trying to obtain. As an example take a look at Tom Campbells show reel Tom Campbell's Film/Video Productions He uses the Inspiration a great deal and yes there is a lot of shark footage on open circuit (but remember that Sony 900 is generating a magnetic field as is the Amphibico housing through its electronic controls) but at around 8 min in there is a clear shot of rebreather plus sharks. I guess it depends on what you feel comfortable with, how the sharks behave in that area, at that time of year, and so on, but I'd be surprised to find it a major issue. |

| Holiday diver Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Rebreathers Sharks Don't worry too much. Most sharks including the GWS here in Perth are vegetarians. honest. As for electronics attracting sharks I reckon it's a myth(ish), but definatly nuffing to worry about. If it would be true then the same would be true for your computer, bottom timer, (video) camera etc etc. So the divers in SA use kisses, or no Rebreather's at all? Denz.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Rebreathers Sharks I like sharks. With that said, if you get freaked out about it there's a device called a "Shark Shield", and I've seen it in action. It absolutely works - I saw it stop a shark that was ACTIVELY FEEDING on a dropped stringer - he took off instantly.

![]() | Re: Rebreathers Sharks Don't worry about the the sharks, I have been diving out of Sydney and Queensland and have not seen any yet. I will soon be in South Australia for good (November) and will be using the Rebreather all the time whilst out there... It's not the large things with big white teeth, it's the small ones that you cannot see... ![]()

There are other possible explanations: I thought I read somewhere that they were attracted to bright colors, yellow in particular. I'll stick to my Kiss.Good luck!
