NICE footage, Chris. My problem in the Galapagos with hammerheads was not the rebreather, but the video camera. Whenever I would hit the record button, the hammerheads looked like they could feel the electrical field from it in a bad way.

I wonder if they would be able to make a spring-powered movie film camera? I think that with one of those and my Mark 15.5 with the primary removed I would be able to film arbritrarily close to schooling hammerheads.

Spring powered, like this one. How about a 35mm or at least a super 16 though?

Re: Rebreathers Sharks

OK, I found the article. Here is a quote from the International Shark Attack File.

Sharks see contrast particularly well, so any high contrast color apparel or gear used by a human in the water is especially visible to sharks. The bright yellow color traditionally used in water safety flotation devices and rafts is readily seen by human rescuers looking for missing persons in the sea and likely is seen easily by sharks as well. As a result, shark researchers laughingly refer to this color as "yum yum yellow!"

Re: Rebreathers Sharks

There are only a few full mechanical cameras around.
There was an old- Cannon AE2 that we straight mechanical.
However better known are the Nikon FM series. Photo geeks carry them when every else craps out when you are miles from no where.

I know that they have problem with the ‘spin up’ effect of some film cameras but do digitals have this problem?

This presents an interesting question for case manufactures…

I have noticed a few articles on two items- HID lights and scooters both seems to have attraction elements to them.

How would you like to get a 20 meg image out of 2 meg digital camera…?
This is a good article “pixel efficient cameras” MIT Review.

Being in Cape Town this was too big a risk due to the Great Whites.
I suspect that someone might have been pulling your leg. There is a very small comunity of Inspo/Evo divers in the Cape and to my knowledge no one has had any "unusual" attention from our freindly denisons of the deep.

Enjoy your unit!

Re: Rebreathers Sharks

Thanks Fellas (and fellaesses)

I'll stop being a big girls blouse and get on with it with out worrieing, or i will once the nice people at AP finish my YBOD!!

I don't however buy in to the idea that my camera generates a bigger EM field than the yellow box. If this were true the camera woudl attact sharks whereas everybody knows the best shark repelent is a camera

Still Bubbling for now

Re: Rebreathers Sharks

Just because sharks are attracted to electrical signals, it doesn't mean they are attracted to all signals. No differance to humans and smells really. Some are good and some aren't

Re: Rebreathers Sharks

Hello SBFN, welcome to Rebreather World. Having spent lots of time in the water with sharks, I'd have to say that my bubbleless ECCR allowed me to blend in with the surroundings better and the mere fact that we CCR divers are large will cause curiosity and bring the sharks in closer, probably more of a territorial thing than anything else. I don't think the elecrical field that ECCRs generate is really that much, my unit runs on one 9 volt battery. And as has been pointed out already, cameras rerquire much more juice to run and seem to have some bad effect on some types of sharks, but not always.

As for the SA Inpso dudes, I think the big yellow case might have more to do with it. I hope none of them are fat as well. Gives new meaning to the phrase "Yellow Box O' Death".

If you don't get enough shark action with the little yellow Evo, let me know and I'll tell you about my shark calling bottle trick, works everytime... -Andy
