We were just getting to the end of the wreck off of what I believe is fantasy island resort. There was a humming sound like that of a tug boat above us and it penetrated with a low reverberation through you. they grass eels disappeared in a blink and the wreck began to smoke(rust) as if it were in a ultra sonic cleaner. It lasted about 10 seconds then again for about 6 seconds. The first one was while in the navy in CA, the one that rocked SF. On both occasions we had no idea what happened until people asked us if we felt it. we felt the after shock for days while we stayed at Anthony Key resort out on the key in the bungalows.

| Swimmin' upstream Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Rock You Like A Hurrican Hello all, figured I'd share... At 7:08 when the quake hit I was at 75ft under on the en'nenue side of Molokini crater (about 40 miles from the epicenter of the 6.6 quake in the Alinuihaha channel). We had three instructors in the water and 10 divers. The initial sound was something like a huge boat maneuvering over the top of us. You know that sound when two big diesels are out of sync? Seriously, we were looking up! Next, the sound got so loud it became physical. Thrumming in the chest like standing next to a locomotive. I didn't get concerned until my ears started cycling stop to stop at 5 to 7 cycles per second. I thought one of us would blow an eardrum! By this point I'm actually frightened and can feel my chest tighten. I'm thinking we better surface before this gets any worse. About that time (maybe a minuet in) we start heading up, the intensity backs off, and the event ends. We made 40ft. when the 5.9 aftershock hit. The sound was still impressive but the physical intensity was gone. The conversation afterward on the boat was interesting. One of the divers shared a story about being 40 ft below a supertanker that passed directly over head. He said the quake was much louder. I wouldn't have wanted to be any closer to this event as the ear pressure was substantial enough to merit concern. The fish didn't seem to like it much either. They dove head long in to the 10in. cloud of sediment kicked up by the ground shake. I feel fortunate of course... Once in a lifetime... |
