hose puncture

Well, back on this little problem of a hose puncture after hiting the ceiling while scootering in a cave.
The puncture was at the very begining of the hose , on the Rebreather side, where the hose is stretched by the connector himself.
IMHO for scootering this part must be protected against direct impact because the rubber of the hose can be easily crushed between the stone ( for example )and the connector.
On the website Swiss Technical Diving Equipment you can see an EDO 04 with the connector fited on the Rebreather but without the hose.
Dont imagine I said EDO O4 is not bullet proof, it is,and the optionnal plastic cover is great ( except mine that needed to be modified)
You must imagine that your Rebreather is done the same way.
You must imagine your Rebreather with the hose connectors in it but without the hose to understand where is the potential fragility point in your own RB.
Then you protect or not, its your choice.

Hope thats help

Cheers

Marc

Re: hose puncture

So, are you saying that the hose was punctured, or are you saying that the hose side of the connector, going in to the Rebreather, cracked open from the hit, or are you saying that the plastic cracked, tearing the hose?

I wrote hose puncture, just pointing the importance of a specific fragility point but perhaps in specific circumstance.

I think there is two circumstances increasing the risk of hose puncture who are scootering in a cave and wreckdiving.
Often eard that hose puncture or rupture is a fantasm, I ( and now you ) know its not

I know first-hand that it is not...

A long time ago, I was transporting my MK-15 on the back of my truck to a dive center in southern France.

The road was narrow and twisty as most coastal roads around Cote D'Azur. So the unit slit across the truck bed and crashed into one of the side walls.

It just happened that the impact point on the hose was where the brass hose connector (on the inside) and steel side wall. The end of the brass connector cut a 1/2" slit on the THICK MK-15 hose (which I always thought was impossible to damage).

So it is all about pressure point... same as what happened to you when you hit the ceiling.

BTW, I fixed it with a dab of GOOP so not a big deal.
