Halcyon Explorer CCR-35 Rebeather Wing

Have any of you used the Halcyon Explorer CCR-35 Rebreather Wing? I heard that it has excellent trim characteristics when mounted on the Optima CCR's. Which as we all know is a bit bottom heavy.
Thanks,
CCRDVR

I think you will find that a DR tech wing will do just as well if not better...

Re: Halcyon Explorer CCR-35 Rebeather Wing

I am using a Rec Wing with an aluminum back plate. I carry the 6 pound Optima canister weight up high, and I also have about another six pounds hanging up high inside the case from where the top bolt comes in from the back plate. This seems to work really well for me.

Originally, I tried a steel back plate. However, using a lighter back plate and then shifting the weight up high seems to work really well for me. So, I don't need a wing with lots of lift on the bottom. Besides, the Rec Wing has a similar (though not exactly the same) shape, having a flared bottom to support the set up.

I don't know if 35 pounds of lift would be enough. The Rec Wing gives about 50, and that seems just right.

Re: Halcyon Explorer CCR-35 Rebeather Wing

I've tried the wing on my Meg. I thought it was fine, but nothing to get all worked up over. Trims about the same as my Agir 38lb doubles wing. Might be slightly more streamlined. I find the rear dump valve harder to reach than the Agir wing. Both wings have more than enough lift for me.

Re: Halcyon Explorer CCR-35 Rebeather Wing

I'm using one on my Meg as well. I've been very pleased with the wing as it is small and streamlined and allows for plenty of lift down low.

However I must admit that the only wings I've used on the Meg are the CCR-35 and a Halcyon Pioneer 27 so it's not like I've experimented alot. I tried the CCR-35, it seems to be just what I wanted so that's what I'm using.

Do you use the stainless steele back plate or aluminum?

Re: Halcyon Explorer CCR-35 Rebeather Wing

I think you will find the Halcyon wing a bit short and light for the Optima.

Re: Halcyon Explorer CCR-35 Rebeather Wing

I use a DR Rec Wing on my Optima. With a drysuit in cold fresh water I have it set up with a SS plate and 2 pounds in each trim pocket on the head, and thats it for lead. Trims perfectly and I dont need to put any air in the wing, with the drysuit. I might try it with a AL plate and no lead at all to see if it trims out OK.

Regarding the wing you mention. 35 lbs of lift would be too small in fresh water and wouldnt lift your head very far above the waves offshore.

I use stainless steel plates. In fresh water I use a 2 lb Mark Meadows plate. In salt water I use a full size 6 lb stainless plate. In fresh water I've been diving dry and in salt water I've been diving wet (so far anyway).

Depends how you weight yourself (i.e., excessively?). In fresh with a Meadows plate it works fine with plenty of lift diving dry; you barely use it. In salt, same thing when diving wet. When diving dry in salt, I use a full back plate and a couple pounds extra. And it worked fine for me the past couple of weeks to 400 feet with double 80s, HD camera, etc. Again, barely need to use it. Lifted me high enough on the surface waiting for recovery though. YMMV.
