Automatic bailout by Rebreather controller

Interesting.

New US patent for Rebreather with automatic bailout. I think the idea is the controller switches to OC (using same loop just shuts off scrubber and lungs) automatically if it detects high or low ppo2.

AbstractSelf-contained underwater re-breathing apparatus having a breathing circuit, an injection system for adding fresh breathable gas to the breathing circuit, and an automatic control system including a microcomputer for monitoring physical parameters in the breathing circuit and controlling the feeding of breathable gas to the breathing circuit in accordance with said physical parameters. The re-breathing apparatus has a bailout system automatically activated in an emergency, where the breathing circuit is shut off, and the diver starts inhaling directly from the breathable gas supply and exaling to the environment. With the system of the invention, a part of the existing closed circuit is used for bailout, and no separate bailout circuit is provided. Therefore, there is no need to incorporate in the mouthpiece means for switching from one breathing circuit to another, and the mouthpiece can be kept smaller and simpler. Further, switching to bailout is fully automated, so that no actions are required from the diver.

Interesting idea.

The weak point is if they remove the switching mechanism. It'd be nice to be able to manually switch to a CO2-free breathe...

I'm interested how they would plan to "introduce" an Open Circuit mechanism into the loop, that can be remotely switched in and out of operation. If they have some sort of injector in the loop with a vent valve, surely there would be a load of dead space and hence introduce the possibility of CO2 buildup? I would think that the best place in the breathing circuit for an OC feed would be the mouthpiece, particularly as one of the main reasons you're likely to want it is a CO2 hit?

I would guess along the lines of shared breathing hoses and DSV.
Aqualung just introduced the Mistral twin hose reg for rec diving, but the NAVY has been using the Aqualung Mentor twin hose reg all along. Can't be that hard to integrate on into a breathing loop.

This is covered on the Auto shut off, auto bail out, auto flush thread. If you look carefully at the patent, it does all three. The real hardware is shown on the above thread.

On dead space, it is about 3 cubic cm, ie nothing at all.

There are good reasons for not putting the feed in the mouthpiece. Exhaust in mouthpiece, but not feed.

AD_Ward9 is the inventor.
