Pockets for blob on Harness

Hi All

I have recently got a SS Backplate and harness and would like people’s opinions and suggestions about pockets for twos AP DSMBs with bottle.

I have the Inspiration pocket which goes on the waist strap but this is falling to pieces now. Also I am not too keen on it now as its horizontal and I would prefer a vertical one.

I have seem ones which sort of attach to the side of the backplate, but it doesn't look those would be easy to replace the blob underwater if you need to – maybe this would be ok for the spare second one…

I would like to be able to store two AP DSMBs with bottles and a little underwater notebook thing.

I was thinking of using thick bungee to hold them to the waist strap....

Suggestions and opinions please!

Best regards,

Ian

Sorry, not a direct answer...

2 AP DSMB with bottles is quite a load.

I keep 1 red AP DSMB with bottle in a suit pocket. The yellow one is smaller and CO2 cartridge-filled so goes to the other suit pocket with spare mask, notes, etc.

I found that keeping too much stuffs around the hardness is cumbersome and get tangled with other stuffs (i.e. stages, camera, scooter, etc). Since you only use the blob at the end of the dive, just keep it clear away until then.

The only bag I bungie to the bottom of the backplate is the liftbag for dives when I plan to bring something up, or put on the anchor to reduce pulling effort from surface.

Good point I could keep one blob on the harness and easy to get to and one on the BP which is harder to get to, but less likley to need to get to unless I jap the reel...I would prefer that

Re: Pockets for blob on Harness

In the past, I also carry a back-up red DSMB in case I mess up the first attempt.

This 2nd red DSMB is a manual-inflated version so could be folded flat/rolled and placed almost anywhere easily. I store it in a very old Halcyon backplate pocket.

I have seen people roll the 2nd one up and bungied to the side of the backplate as well. Or bottom.

Re: Pockets for blob on Harness

I just use a bit of bungy off the backplate.

I put blobs to the sides and a lift bag at the bottom.

Its a quick fix that I kept for its simplicity.

Yes and no.

When I place a liftbag or DSMB on the bottom of the backplate, I would like:
  • able to roll small enough that it doesn't push the unit too far away.
  • able to place the bag back u/w if changed mind.
  • able to pass the crotch strap on the "inside" (next to me) instead of pinching the bag with the crotch strap.
The curve on the backplate actually help to hide the thickness of the bag/DSMB so it doesn't put any pressure on my bums.

That way does 1 & 3 but I can't put it back, well I've never tried, actually I've never taken it out of there in anger (I have on my travel chasis). It does make a nice bit of padding though and I miss it if it isn't there.

IMHO, you should be able to put back any gear you able to take out. Or has alternative plan to place it away neatly (i.e. the aforementioned 2nd red DSMB on backplate pocket, I just roll it and put on bungie on bottom of backplate).

The reason is anything stowed away will come loose eventually, and if you can't put it away neatly, you will spend the rest of the dive thinking/worrying about it... unless you are the type of divers who don't care what you look like u/w...

I know someone will come with the u/w fashion police comment soon enough... but to me, doesn't care is just showing a slopiness mindset and could carry over to other issues.

And yes, I am almost as anal-retentive as Joe R...
