| CHRISB Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Spare Masks A couple of years back I had taken my mask off during a dive to give it an extra defogging and whilst rubbing it one of the window panes popped out. In doing this I managed to destroy the sealing portion of the skirt as well. As consequence I had to finish the dive (and it had only just begun), with using 'the force' only. What made this an extra challenge is that I was doing a private video shoot. I managed to complete the dive with mega blood shot eyes and not a particularly spectacular video . Learned that 'it could happen', and IF 'it would happen' on a tech dive with loads of deco & without others about to assist; then things could be not good. I now carry one tucked away/behind me in the BCD bladder.

| Still Learning.... Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Spare Masks Seeing as most people replying to this carry a mask (or would carry one if they could get it back off whoever they lent it to!) are there any specific recommendations for a specific mask type? I know that getting a good fitting mask can be a matter of personal taste but on the basis that carrying a less than perfect spare mask is probably better than not carrying a spare that is low volume, compact, sturdy etc. then getting an idea of masks that will fit into the "oh bugger" pocket (with the yellow SMB, whistle, mirror etc.) might help some people.

![]() ![]() | Re: Spare Masks I always carry a small, low volume mask. Most of my dives are deco dives. Can't afford not to see my PP02 or my deco info. No need to call the dive. Just pull out the spare. Some folks suggest that you can trap an air bubble in your clenched hand and look through it, but if I need to, I'd rather take my spare out of my pocket! I check it at the start of every dive and I switch my standard mask for the spare from time to time, just to make sure it's in good condition if/when I need it.

I carry a small low volume mask who's strap broke some time ago and I replaced it with bungie. Works great for clipping to a double ender in my left pocket.

| Classic KISS No. 226 ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Spare Masks My spare is exactly the same as my primary mask - I use an Oceanic Shadow; black of course It's a nice low profile, low volume mask and the skirt it really flexible allowing for easy stowage in my pocket. I have a small loop of cave line around the mask strap, and clip it off to my pocket bungee using a double ender. Cheers Rich

Use whatever you use for your main mask. No need to worry about fit. I use a couple of freediving masks for both my main and my spare, very low volume. Can't remember the make, it's French. Nice and easy to clear. My mask isn't clipped off because I like being able to get it out my pocket quick. Cheers, Stuart
