| Proper Boffin ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Need some more, bigger bailout tanks than my current setup of 7's. Whats the consensus on here as to what I should go for bearing in mind that I'm talking about getting and carrying 2 of them (one each side): Steel 10's or Ally 80's or something else? I know the 80's have slightly more capacity, but they're huge and heavy out of the water! As for bouyancy characteristics, as far as I'm concerned they are only relevant in this application in a full state as that's how they'll be staying for 99.999% (hopefully) of the time. |

I've been using my old Ali 10 OC stages, they are big buggers to be sure but full on 232bar 10's so you get a fair heap of gas.I've got two, if you want one PM me... For some of the stuff I want to do now, its starting to make sense not just to add capacity but also a different mix (optimal deco). Doing this has the added advantage of spreading your risk, since now you'll have an extra reg for swapping if it all goes horribly wrong. The downside is that for one dive Im looking like needing 4 tanks, which means my sherpa/buddy is going to be schlepping some of OUR bailout around (Its not cave stuff, so I cant stage it)So padowan, how about another 7? /Zak PS. ALi80's are great, but they dont half get bouyant when you breath them down.

At the moment I have one tank with something like 18/40 and one with something like 50% - if I want bailout for much deeper dives obviously I need a deeper mix - but then what about in the shallows, I want richer gasses up there...So padowan, how about another 7? /Zak PS. From an O2 perspective maybe a 15%, a 32% and an 80% would cover the range? |

If I was buying any more then I'd probably buy 80's. 12's too big, 7's too small. Ally 10's are dustbins, you're a braver man than I, Ben. Most of my Rebreather diving is underground so I prefer the bigger capacity. Personally, I don't like steels for stages, I've had too many bad experiences with them.

![]() | Re: More bailout please.... What's popular around here are those worthington composite tanks. A thin steel tank *wrapped* in carbon fibre for extra strength. they are much smaller than ALU (size of a steel), and very light. and are rated to 300 bar. There are different sizes 7, 10 and 12l, but IIRC one of them is just too light (floats with +100bar) I think it was the 12l?, the others are better. drawbacks: expensive (~300 euro's?) somewhat fragile. rumor goes if you damage the wrapping they will fail your tank on hydro I don't use them myself but are very common around here, I just carry twin 12's or 18's on my back for bail-out ![]() |
