![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Stolen rebreathers? I don't know if this idea has merit or not, so I'll open it up to the masses. We as a rebreather comunity are very good at publicising stolen rebreathers and making them un-saleable, we are also good at publicising the fact that these are life support equipment and are liable to kill you if used without training. However this may well lead to potentialy dangerous equipment being dumped. Is there any merit in setting up some way that anyone who knows the location of a stolen rebreather can report it anonymously? Simon A |

I like the idea. I will do my part by taking care of all of the sketchy looking people around my neighborhood. Seriously though, I would help you put something together. I don't know if we could do anything to stop them from getting stolen period b'c I would assume the scumbag capable of doing such things would oftentimes not know what they are stealing. We as a rebreather comunity are very good at publicising stolen rebreathers and making them un-saleable, we are also good at publicising the fact that these are life support equipment and are liable to kill you if used without training. | Holiday diver Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Stolen rebreathers? Iani, Just chill mate. Simons idea is good, although i doubt it's gonna work. The baddies stealing, are not gonna put any effort into getting it back, increasing the risk of getting caught. Dumping is easier and there's always someone in a dodgy pub who'll give you 100 bucks for that funny looking thing with 2 hoses somehow powered by batteries. In short, for giving it back you need a person who cares, and those ****s don't. As a small example: I used to drive a 4 yr old ford fiesta and it had a crappy old radio. A radio that cost new about 30 bucks, and was about 15 yrs old with a resale value at that moment of about $3.00 In the attemtp to get it the guy girl damaged my car for 2300 bucks. Do you really think that low life scum like that would put any effort into getting it back to the owner if it turned out to be un-sale-able? The idea is good tho, and any effort that can be made to re-unite stolen goods wih their owners should be made. I reckon a world wide database with serial numbers and discribtions would be nice, divided in different sections. Say for regs, breathers, computers basicly anything with a serial number. You see a 2nd hand APEKS ATX200 for sale, anywhere, note the number, surf to www.stolendivegear.... go to regs, go to apeks, fill in the number and type and it'll say if it's registered as stolen and thru the site you can send the original owner an email.... And give the link a prominent place on every dive related internet site. I don't think waiting for the goodness of baddies will work.... denz.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Stolen rebreathers? Ian, It was all meant for those who are not humor impaired. When someone got his Boris stolen, I used a program I have that automatically looks for all words associated with it on E-Bay auctions, and I have been militant about posting scam rebreather auctions and alerting E-Bay, then going about on the boardds finding the owners of the photos and contacting the bidders to warn them. I even found Ed Bett's stolen UT-240 on E-bay and alerted him. One of the things I like about our small family is everyone looks out for eachother, regardless of model owned, and the thread topic starter is a perfect example. I know you wish you had known all of my activities related to stolen CCR's before you posted your reponse to my humor, but don't sweat it. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Stolen rebreathers? All joking aside, this does bring up a tangent question worth discussing. I claim near total ignorance of how hard this would be but: Would it be possible for a page/ section to be added to this site where members could post pertinent info re stolen rebreathers? One VERY useful function might be to have a viewable database of serial numbers of units that have “gone missing”. It would make quick work for someone wondering if the used rig they are considering for purchase has questionable parentage. An expanded section could give more details such as location & date of theft and a detailed description of rig, i.e. the subtle differences from other rigs of same make & model. Anyone could post, but only administrators could remove. This sort of info seems to currently be posted hit or miss in various threads. Idea is to put it all in one easily checked spot with serial numbers prominent. Thoughts? |
