It was a real eye opener when I had to bail out about 1000ft in a cave with an average depth of 90ft or so. Based on my planning, I could bail out with that single Alum 80 up to 1500ft into the cave, and exit with 1/3 of my gas remaining. After bailing out at 1000ft, I exited the cave with 1200psi(3100psi to start) remaining.

On a sidemount OC dive a couple days later, I exited from that same place on an Alum 80 stage(in addition to my 2 sidemount bottles) using only 1000psi. It proved to me that just because I can do it OC doesn't mean I can do it OC after bailing out from CCR. I attribute it to stress level and the fact that I was NOT on OC the whole time, which helps to regulate my breathing to a much slower level than when on CCR. Not sure why that is....

In addition to bailing out to get your RMV it is also worth occasionally bailing out all the way to the surface to keep your skills up with regards to managing your loop all the way to the surface when on OC.

Is it a PITA to keep emptying the loop on the way up and if you were stressed and forgot it you could find yourself with a full loop rapidly propelling you to the surface......

Nicety of back mounted counter lungs, in this situation, just fill with dil and ignore, the confined maximum volume is only marginally greater than there working volume, so just let the OPV do it's job on ascent. One less thing to deal with. No changes to bouyancy during the ascent phase.

I had a sort of interesting bail out experience this weekend. On the second dive of the day I started to feel my breathing go up and up + a slight headake. CO2, I have had it once before on another Rebreather. My scrubber was at ~150 min and I have taken it to 240-260min in colder waters at similar depths.

So I switched to my 7l bailout and used it for a few minutes alerting my buddy. While casually returning I tried to go back on the loop and flush it but it did not work.

Back on the line and going up I realised that I was not having enough lead with my CL-filled to max and the bailout down to about 90 bar.

Having to switch and empty the loop was annoying and I now know that I have been a little too eager on removing lead, having shaved off 3-4 kg from what I started with.

I also dive a mccr modified Azimuth and full Cl gives me a few more kg than normal. So I will put some more lead back in.
