Strobs and shot lines

At the weekend I clipped my strobe of to the shot line for the first time.
It didn't really work the reasons I think were that I clipped it off to high about 22m on a 32m dive. Also I'm not sure how good the stobe my strobe is.

I have one of these:

I'm wondering whether to get another and have two or to get a bigger one like this:

What do you guys use and how far off the bottom do you clip them?

Re: Strobs and shot lines

Hi

Tried with a "John Line" holder with a 5 cms line atached to your strobe.

We put it 7-10 mtrs up the botton.

Hope that can help you

Regards

Re: Strobs and shot lines

We recently tried using strobes to 'log and log out'. Teams of 2 would hit the bottom and leave a strobe and then took it with them on the way out. That way we had a very good idea if any of the teams were in trouble on the bottom (ie if you were last to the bottom there should be only 1 strobe on the way out). When all teams are on the bottom the upline looks like a *ucking rave party!

Re: Strobs and shot lines

Generally I don't go back to the shot (hey- I already saw that part of the wreck ) but when the skipper insists I rely on navigation not strobes.

Last year in Northern Ireland with 40-50mtr viz people where strobing the shot 10-20mtrs off the bottom quite pointlessly as you could see the upline from almost 60mtrs away!

In the summer I did some gas diving mid-English channel and it was "abit murky" but 8-15mtrs viz, still people put the strobes 5-10mtrs off the bottom, you couldn't see even the fearsome Jotron strobes from the wreck!!!

In my experience very few divers look up, few look even look where they are going.... so if you are going to strobe the shot why not put it max 1mtr above the wreck, that way you can see it when you face the right general direction?

Lastly- Strobes are expendable... never go back to the shot because you have £100 worth of strobes there, seen people get seriously overtime looking for the shot "'cause I wanted my strobe" when bagging off and hoping the skipper hauled the strobe up would have been far more sensible.

Just my humble opinion.

BEN

Strobes are for Airplanes and Discos, divers have torches and brains!

Re: Strobs and shot lines

Hi Mate i ha 6 of the top red strobes, they work just fine. I use cave line and a double loop which is very easy to work with.

We always put strobes on the shot when station diving and i generally put my one closer to the wreck the less viz there is and further away with more viz.

With 10m viz Ill put it 8m up the line. I judge this by the point at which I can see the wreck when descending the shot.

In low viz i put it within 1-2m of the wreck.

Our shots are always tied in so there is little or no possibility of the shot being pulled well off the wreck but watch out for this situation.

On dark but good viz dives the strobe is excellent for finding your way home (it worked well for me last week ) but in average or less I always lay a line.

Re: Strobs and shot lines

What Chasey said.

I clip them high but within the limits of visibility. FWIW Beanie, I stuck one at 2m on the line on Hatt Rock. With 2m vis it disappeared almost immediately, which is why God invented compasses.

Re: Strobs and shot lines

And all this time I was thinking that was what my reel was for.... I've never tried it but if visability is let's say 5 meters or so, is the distance that a a strobe can be seen consederably longer or just a factor 2 or so?

Re: Strobs and shot lines

I use two Jotrons that I put between 5 and 10 metres above the wreck depending on visibility.

I use a system to attach them that I will photograph and post images of later.

Cheers,

Dave Cooper.
