I particularly use this when I dive solo and am going to be the last one out of the water.
coops, whats wrong with a jon thats attached via a prussik? thats what I use. Costs me about £7 to build, including a clip you can release under tension.

From experience, Prussil doesn't work very well when not under tension.

As far as breaking Jotrons, you guys are much harder on your equipment than me. I only have been using my Jotron for 8 years...

Teethy Strobes

Interesting anecdote!

In the Flower Garden the divemaster put out the strobes for the night dives and retrieve them. One evening after putting out the strobes a radio call came in advising of a large tiger shark had been sighted in the area.

The divemaster went back in and pulled the strobes!

That takes balls in my book!

Provided you select your cord type/diameter appropriately, you'll be fine. Remember, we're not climbing here, its merely a locking mechanism. Also, re; tension... if theres no tension, theres no need for a jon line. Simple really

Re: Strobs and shot lines

Anyone know the size of the o-ring in the Jotrons? On first use mine flooded. Turns out the o-ring has a significant cut in it. It still works, but I want to get a new o-ring before trying again.

Can you show a pick or give a link explaining a Prussell please.

Re: Strobs and shot lines

Try this here;

http://www.cybernex.net.au/clubs/pat...s_Prussik.html

or http://ozultimate.com/canyoning/knots/prusik/

The trick here is that the prussik cord needs to be < 1/2 the diameter of the main cord. Using a cord with a 3 strand laid construction is also better than something braided.

Mine is tied as a double loop bowline in the end of a cord with a yachting clip on the other end.

The downside to doing this, is if people run overlapping schedules, since the prussik then has to be removed and replaced.

As phi says, without any tension, the prussik is easy to slide up/down. This makes it ideal for this application IMHO.

The tolerances aren't great on the ones I have, so I presume they are all the same. It helps to use plumbers tape on the threads, packs it out. No idea about the o-ring though. HTH
