You are correct, Ben. It housed that stuff, as well as trash, etc created by the EOD guys and others who were aboard her for the towing and final sinking preparations. The little boat was designed to float right off, and she did.IIRC we have a wreck off the East coast of the UK, (its a large cargo vessel) that has a second wreck, (sunk much later) thats landed right in one hold, a little fishing boat, Bonus! And now for the rest of the story...It almost did become two for the price of one. The small boat on the deck was a liberty boat launch borrowed from the nuclear carrier USS EISENHOWER, which contained a metal conex box with a bunch of electronics that was used as the server for the computer Ethernet system that allowed for the explosives to be detonated via a laptop computer at a station on the bridge of the command vessel POWHATAN, as well as other stuff as previously mentioned by Heather. The bridge on the POWHATAN during the 37 minute sinking was very quiet. Then a unified cheer went up when that little boat miraculously freed itself as the ORISKANY itself sank. Apparently the shock of the 22 separate but near simultaneous explosions to cut the closed valves on the sea water intake pipes that flooded the ship, knocked out the signal that would have enabled the little charges on the cables holding the IKE-3 boat on the deck to be remotely detonated, thereby automatically cutting the cables. So the fact the IKE-3 boat made it off was pretty fortunate - basically everything happened as exactly as planned. It is also interesting to note that the engineers anticipated it would take 34 minutes to sink, and they were only 3 minutes off! Pretty remarkable considering the size and complexity of this sink project. The IKE-3 boat was successfully recovered and towed back to Pensacola. |

Did she settle in alittle more than expected? Great Photos everyone... Do we know if there is a TV show in the process for the sinking. How do they plan to mark her for diveboat tie in's? I am just curious how many tie in's they are planning for? Later, Andrew

The flight deck is 136-137 (gauge against the deck) pretty consistently. I got the same reading adjacent to the island as well as on the extreme stern (which is pointing north), so I don't think there is much of an angle. No noticeable list to either side either. Did she settle in alittle more than expected? Great Photos everyone... Do we know if there is a TV show in the process for the sinking. I don't know why the USN released the erroneous depth information, especially since it was released before EOD had completed their dives. Discovery Channel was out filming the sinking, and had several cameras in housings in the air boss bridge facing fore and aft. There was supposedly also one in the hangar. I also believe National Geographic is doing something on the sinking. |

Whats the tidal range in the Gulf? I assume it is very small indeed?I don't know why the USN released the erroneous depth information, especially since it was released before EOD had completed their dives.
