Sofnolime 797 and color indicator

Hello,

I cannot find any source for Sofnolime without color indicator in the USA.
I am told that it is available to Uncle Sam only.

Now I do not make any use of an indicator at all, because once the scrubber is unpacked so the color would be observable then the dive is already over and the scrubber will not be re-packed.

Nor I see any practical use for it, because (as far as I know) the color can fade again and thus give a wrong indication.

Further, I see it as just another chemical in the loop that one could avoid if possible.

And also I read something that the US Navy even banned that color indicator scrubbers from their use, because they seem to have even bigger (health) concerns.

My questions:
Is there really a bad thing about the color indicator (for example does it harm my lungs on certain (deeper) dives)?

Would it be availble somewhere, or why is the regular civilian ought to use a scrubber that must not be used by the USN for example? Is that an USA specific only?

Please let me know what your thoughts are on that,
thank you,
tobias.

Re: Sofnolime 797 and color indicator

Colour indicators are widely used in scrubber material in anaesthesia without problems - though we don't flood the breathing circuit and make our patients inhale a caustic cocktail! Other than that possibility it should be OK, I have no info on toxicity in solution though.

Re: Sofnolime 797 and color indicator

If you want to get hold of sofnolime with or without color indication i would suggest you either contact molecular direct or even AP. If it is reserved for military, then import it yourself from UK.
Here in Europe we can get hold of it without any problems.
