Re: Why you dive on rebreather?

basiclly I couldn't do valve shutdowns on a manifold fast enough under all condition to be safe using from my point of view. I didn't like independants for deeper dives. So that left me looking for a another way to do deep dives at a level of safety I felt comfortable with. End result was I modifed a exisitng SCR unit to CCR to acheive what I wanted.

Re: Why you dive on rebreather?

I think that's a very good point and another reason why I went to CCR. I've really come to believe it is the safest way to do deep dives.

Re: Why you dive on rebreather?

Why do I dive Rebreather?

My diving is split into different sections- recreational diving with my club, deeper wreck diving with my friends and gas diving with both.

Often I don't know what my next dive will be, sometimes the plan only comes together on a Friday, with the Rebreather it matters far less if the next days dive is 4mtrs, 45mtrs or 65mtrs than OC.

Secondly I was keeping 9 tanks in test and O2 clean, now I keep 4 tanks in test, 2 in O2 clean (cheaper, lighter)

While I'm not back there yet, Trimix in the UK is stupidly expensive, doing more than a few dives a year on OC was prohibitive, hopefully with Rebreather I can do a few more.

Lastly, I use gas like its going out of fashion, was diving twin 15's previously... WAY too heavy the Rebreather is a relief!

Thats because your aftershave smells like a seal in heat.

For me it was primarily gas logistics (france trips were what tipped me over the edge).

Since then the additional benefits I've seen are;
  • Warm/moist breathing gas (far better for the phsyiology)
  • Silent diving
  • Many more get out of jail options at depth

Of course there are downsides;
  • more kit maintenance time
  • need to be meticulous in monitoring yourself/the breather
  • blowing liftbags now requires a friendly OC diver

Re: Why you dive on rebreather?

Cost saving on Helium

Logistical ease of use for multi day deep dives

Safer than OC for deep wreck diving

Much safer than OC for wreck penitratin

Warm moist gas should help avoid DCI in cold UK diving.

Re: Why you dive on rebreather?

Only now can I truly say "Bite my shiney metal ass".

Seriously though, when I made the choice it was due to;
  1. Endurance
  2. Gas efficiency
  3. flexibility
After a couple of years;
  1. Endurance
  2. Unique feeling of belonging underwater, rather than clunking my way around.
  3. Flexibility
  4. Cost
  5. Safety
When we kick off it is because of a rational argument taking into consideration all aspects. Asking why we still dive a rebreather may bring a few more answers that were not expected.

I wonder how many will be truly honest and admit they have a kit fetish.
You are out there, we know you are. Same people that buy a Porsche Cayanne.

Re: Why you dive on rebreather?

Mine's more about logistics. My LDS is a good 45 minute drive each way. The times that I can typically get there are their busy times and it sucks waiting for fills (plus I'll usually end up buying too much junk as I sit there).

On the diving side of the logistics, I can do a whole weekend of dives off carrying just a few 13's (I like a lot of shallow lake diving). Getting back into my boat is easier with an Rebreather than the doubles I typically would use.

Re: Why you dive on rebreather?

I can never justify the $$$$ investment in anything other than emotional terms:

'Cause I'm a dork with a thing for technology
'Cause I like less deco
'Cause I like long dives
'Cause of the silence, the warm, moist air
'Cause I like the process, the discussions, the practise, the tinkering
'Cause I like not having to worry about gas consumption
'Cause I want to learn to dive deeper
'Cause I like watching critters

'cause, 'cause, 'cause....
