Do I take them to him, and tell him to repaint them two pack black, give them a couple of coats, mask up the valves carefully, and not bake them?

I should say, the tanks are brand new, I just don't like yellow tanks.

Thanks for the help so far.
Two things, take what you need.

Faber cyls are enamel coated which involves curing at less than elevated temperatures. Two pack enamel is similar and hard as nails.

I do the safety inspections for BOC oxygen sites. At Wolves where we put in a brand new cylinder inspection plant, the 47.7 O2 cyls are solvent painted just like car paint as you were previously advised but cured at 60deg C.

Have fun.

Brent.

Re: Cylinder Paint

Its great to see we have divers who know what they are talking about. I did not know the temps for spray ovens, but at least someone did.

My point is, IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT, MAKE IT CLEAR IN YOUR POST SUCH AS "I BELIEVE......" RATHER THAN SPOUTING CR@P ABOUT "YOU CANT DO THAT BECAUSE" which turns out to be drivel...

Re: Cylinder Paint

Hi Graham,

I don't know Heisers here in oz, but the cylinders are either powdercoated or 2pac enamel. Your brotherinlaw will be able to tell... and will be best able to advise which process he would use. He can either paint strip or rub back depending on the condition of the existing paint.

If the yellow has adhered properly from the start, it can remain as a base coat, and further paint can be applied on top of it..

However, all paint will eventually chip, and the undercolour may appear eventually and the cylinder will show signs of wearing over time and will need to be renewed...

Also, understand that to pay for such a process from an automotive shop will not usually be economical unless you know someone....

and btw, the cylinder valve is removed, and a (plastic) plug is inserted and the tank is hung from the plug and then painted.

Hope this helps,
Cheers, JDZ

Re: Cylinder Paint

You may want to check out VIP and hydro procedures in the UK. In the USA, any tank having been repainted is subject to suspicion and posible condemnation by the inspector. (I say this as a dive shop owner who performs VIPs) This is primarily due to several unfortunate incidents in the US due suspected baking.

Of course, however being in North America - read better service and variety - you won't get this as we can get pretty much whatever we want over here.

Most tanks over there are yellow, and as fas as I know will have white and black quadrants on the crown.

I posted on another forum the experience I had with the valves, ie a store would not supply me 300bar valves to put on to 232bar tanks in case I overfilled them. Don't worry, I got them somewhere else.
