Re: How Big do I need my Wing

Hey Steven,

I tried a few wings on my MK15.5 but settled on the Dive rite rec wing. (Kevin Denlay uses this as well)

I used to have it on my YBOD as well.

It gives me more than enough lift [wetsuit, 2x12L stages and a porthole clipped to my crotch strap ]

Plus its tapered more than most so gives better trim for ass heavy rbs.

To help even more with trim and to help clear the top of the wing from the Rebreather hoses I got my maid to re-stitch the top of the wing narrower (just folded over the inner bag inside - wing cover keeps the shape)

I know Jerome used a halycon wing on his MK15.5 and likes it. I tried it but for me I found it gave rotten trim (not tapered enough) I like a Rebreather wing that is wide at the bottom and narrow at the top.

To make holes in the wing to match and fit to my DIY split backplates I used a soldering Iron.

Like KevinD I too have the dual rec (although obviously Kevins is far older than mine) - but I hated the clutter of the 2nd inflator and wasnt convinced ir was necessary (Id rather shoot a bag if needed) so I blanked it off. I also removed the bungees they arent necessary as the wing doesnt flap around.

Congrats again on your purchase.

Re: How Big do I need my Wing

A loop flood (perish the thought) will seriously affect ones bouyancy - I would suggest you consider figuring the loss (in litres) of your Rebreather loop and add that to whatever size BC you are happy with.

Personally I have the Custom Divers VBS - I can alter the size of the wing from 45 - 75lb with a few zips - works for me.

Re: How Big do I need my Wing

i didnt like the standard ybod wing i didnt feel it gave me enough lift and with a dt box i couldnt get the trim as i wanted so i had a custom divers TDB wing wide bottom and sallow top the trim is much better a i can sit higher out of the water

Re: How Big do I need my Wing

Has anyone done any "tests" to see how negative a ccr would be with a worst-case scenario complete flood?

Re: How Big do I need my Wing

Redundant wings are extra drag you really don't need with a rebreather unless you are using heavy steel bailouts. I don't put that much air in my wing even with 2 bailout bottles it's not like diving heavy steel doubles. I use a Dive Rite wreck wing. I have made a 1800 ft swim with a disconnected wing without a problem.
