Since I am right handed, I combined the primary handset, slate and compass on the left forearm. That way, I can write with the pencil on the slate using my right hand. To use the compass, I just roll the handset to around my forearm briefly, use the compass, and then I roll it back. On the right arm, I have the backup handset and a D3. I would really only need the D3 in the event that both handsets go out. To access, roll the right arm handset. I apologize for the poor photos. I only have a camera phone. |

![]() | Re: Where can I get a proper armslate? What kind of writting tool are you using with the slate? Is it one of those solid graphic things? Pencils always seem to break the points off when I want to use it, and then I am forced to chew on the end or sharpen it somewhat with my knife losing large amounts of it in the process. |

The Golem slate comes with one already in it. I think it is a carbon stick. This is similar to a graphite stick but somewhat tougher, and it has shrink wrap type reinforcement around it as well. If the slate comes with regular graphite sticks, that is okay. However, I would suggest going with the carbon sticks once that wears down. Forget wood pencils. The wetting and drying of the wood will cause it to expand and contract, cracking and breaking it. This will allow the point to break off too easily. I have also had pretty good luck with mechanical pencils. |

I can find my way out of the cave by following my wood golf pencils I have lost while trying to survey :-)If the slate comes with regular graphite sticks, that is okay. Cut an 8" piece, then cut it in half so you have 2 U shaped 8" peices/ Boil one in a big pan of water until it is soft Wrap a large towel around your selected arm you want to wear it on Fish out the HOT PVC with tongs and gloves on Lay the PVC over the towel and form to your forearm Let cool Trim off corners with a jig saw (I use my big band saw) Sand smooth Make holes for bungee straps Attach a pencil Go Diving OR Save lots of time and buy one from Golem Gear :-) |
