Clearly one's choice of buddy is very important when considering this! ![]() I run in the mornings and do a few exercises at night. I think work on quads, buttocks, lower back and abdominals is also essential for rebreather divers where ladders/lots of bailout is concerned. Muscularly fit, rather than (an)aerobically fit, as it were. Hands up who has had a bad back since taking up diving...

| Moderator ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Level of fitness and rebreather diving I just want to be able to stick with some kind of program for life. I want it to be something I at least don't hate. So, I took up walking a few years ago. I walk about 3-5 miles/2-8k a couple of times a week. I wouldn't call it power walking. I just keep a good, regular pace without stopping. When the weather is warm, I might swim a bit instead of walking sometimes just to change the routine. Sometimes, I don't do anything for a bit. But, at least this exercise is something that I can always go back to again. I try not to be too hard on myself everytime that I have to start over. I try to dive once a week. The goal is to walk or do something physical like that for about an hour, twice per week, and then go diving once (or more ) per week.I also take supplements regularly, and I am a vegetarian. I would be a vegan if it weren't for some dairy products. If only I could make the final jump .I just turned 46. The doc says I seem to be in great shape "for a man of my age." What could she possibly have meant by that? ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Level of fitness and rebreather diving Apropos topic, so here is my opinion. First, the one where motorycle racing caused heart disease? My ass! Lay off the deep fried chips, buddy! And get off the computer and on the treadmill! If more rebreather divers maintained excellent health, we would have decidedly much less of those "unexpected" deaths you see in the incidents and accidents forum. Heart attack is one of-- if not THE--leading contributing cause of deaths while diving (rebreather or otherwise). MEs usually rule those deaths as drowning, of course. If you have high cholesterol and excess body fat, why not lay lay off the processed and sugary foods, (which in turn reduces one's insulin resistance that has been found in EVERY cardiac incident examined for it) and of course, exercise! Some, because of their genetics, will have to work harder at it, but same goes with the rest of life. Even more than the ones pushing the envelope of human performance, its the unhealthy rebreather divers that give the sport a DANGEROUS name! If one spends all this time planning, paying, talking and writing about ones dives, why is it such a hard stretch to prepare for them physically! Recall Nuno Gomez, current record holder for the deepest OC scuba dive. Do you think his record dive was an accident? Nuno is working out almost every day, typically with a two-hour pass in the gym, to prepare his body for the physical strain his body gets exposed to when diving. He is also swimming for three hours at a time and plays underwater hockey. The underwater hockey works as a fitness program. “You got to stay in shape. The body gets beat up from being under water for so long and at such extreme depths. Deep technical diving is very different from recreational diving. Technical diving is very demanding; you have to be in great shape, both mentally and physically. Mental strength is one of cornerstones to success. You will achieve that through strong self-esteem and ability to focus on the mission. Years of experience, knowledge about yourself and how you interact with your equipment give you the mental stamina to accomplish great things.” Enough said. |

Luckily living in asia there is always a little man around who will do the heavy lugging ![]() Most of the people I dive with are fat bastards ![]() A kindred spirit, and, we are more than qualified to dive together it seems. I'm deffo a fat lazy twat. I went on salads and crap like that for three months, lost half a stone. Got a bout of septic tonsillitis and lost a stone and a half. Cant decide which was a more painfull experience. Now I just eat as healthy as I can and avoid fatty food. When i need made to measure I'll do a few sit-ups. Until then, I'll just exercise at the bar. Speaking of asia, I know there's plenty of potential exercise out there mate Brent
