Re: Training: from 0 to normoxyc TX Insp in 3 week?

3 weeks is 21 days - give yourself 3 off days and that is still 18 days of diving...what is the difference between 18 diving days spread over 21 days or 18 days spread over 2 years???

I think it is entirely possible to go from 0 to normoxic in 3 weeks - particular in the warm clear waters of the Philippines. I also think Mark (the only voice of reason in the village??? ) makes an excellent point about the usefulness of OC skills - there is relatively few opportunities to switch cylinders in a CCR course and these skills are very valuable in a bailout situation.

All IMHO of course

It sounds like something that is going too far too fast but with the right experience and three strait weeks of diving it's possible. If someone can take off and commit a lot of time to learning it can be done a lot faster than someone who just dives once a month.

Wow, some of the replies really blew me away.

HE is a very unforgiving gas can you do a free ascent in zero viz maintaining buoyancy to 1' and if yes for how long?

This is a very good point but lets look at the facts. As you said it has never happened to you. Well in 18 years of diving its never happened to me either. If the viz is that bad id can the dive before I got into serious deco but thats another issue.

Just looking at what would have to happen to make this problem occur.

I would have to lose my primary reel and primary SMB, This is an 80m ratchet reel permanently attached to a mini cylinder self inflating red SMB. Then I would have to loose my secondary reel and back up SMB this is a 125m Halcyon Pathfinder side spool that i use for laying line on wrecks This is attached to my full size SMB with mini CO2 bottle inflation. Finally i would have to lose my Yellow OOA signaling SMB (also C02 bottle) and my 25m jump gap spool I use for lost line search.

Oh and obviously I have lost my buddy or he has lost his primary Custom Divers 125m attached to a crack bottle and his and secondary Halcyon Pathfinder + co2 SMBs as well so its a pretty bad day all round.

I hate doing free ascents without a point of reference. I don't mind hanging free when i get to a stop but i hate doing the ascent bit. Id probably get the job done if i needed to but I have to admit its something I never practice. So even after 18 months on the unit including four solid weeks of diving and two to three dives a month in between I would still struggle to pull this off.

Whilst there are other important reasons for carrying two large reels and a spool and three SMBs this is without doubt a primary reason.

As my DIR buddies often say: I am using equipment to cover up a lack of diving ability

I say: It works for me

You missed my point (I think) in that even after 18 months the scinario you put forward would be a chalange for me.

I am confident I could nail boyancy and drills with three weeks of intensive training. The biggist problem for most is the long breaks between dives.

I know for me a week long trip a couple of months after taking my Mod 1 was the big turning point in my comfort on the unit.

That scenario I put forward is a challenge to any one, even divers who dive those conditions every day.
