Canadian Forces had DCIEM look at this to improve rebreather diver readiness times by prepping units in advance. They tested both fresh and partially used lime and came up with protocols. Generally speaking with the loop closed and holding pressure then IIRC they could store it for 10days. The report indicated that this storage time could be much longer but the tests ended after 10 days so couldn't authorise any longer periods.

I left one of my units full all last year - I filled the scrubber in January, did an hour long dive on it in March, another hour in the June and took it to the pool in October for an half hour muck about. Finally, the other week I emptied the scrubber...the loop was sealed in between times. |

This leads to powdering in the canister resulting from transport. Many units inadequately isolate the absorbant. If you must save absorbant in your canistger, follwin the manufacturer's recommendations for doing so." Mastering Rebreathers (Bozanic 2002), p. 186. Now, this is what the book says. On the other hand, I can't see why keeping the Rebreather from moving about (us Extend Air Cartridge users don't have to worry about that one too much), flushing with oxygen or helium (to assure that there is no atmospheric CO2 in starting a reaction), and then closing the loop on not-yet-activated/pre-breathed scrubber should matter almost in the least. It would seem that one would be able to keep the scrubber in the unit until the expiration of the scrubber like this. Am I missing something here? After looking at the 10 containers of Dragersorb I need to use up pretty quickly, going to dump the current contents of the scrubber. Can the Mastering Rebreathers book only be ordered online or anyone know if I can buy it in Amsterdam ?
