How many switched to Metric

How many of you have switched to using metric? I have been concedering it, but have held off as imperial has become so instinctive to me that I may not really understand whats happening if I switch my computers over to metric.
Metric just seems much more intuitive especially now that I am diving a rebreather.

Re: How many switched to Metric

Using metric system is easy for me as that is what I have always used here in Finland. While I understand that the change is not really easy, it is something that would be beneficial in my view for everyone.

Like some sources say, metric system (or SI) fits more closely to our decimal calculations which is really apparent when you compare how certain things are calculated in scuba diving. The metric formula is usually way more simple.

While information in internet (including wikipedia) can be of dubious value sometimes, the link below is interesting read and shows how US have tried to switch to metric system for quite some time but the public has not really embrased it. Changing something that is second nature for you, is always hard.

I have gone through one such change when our old monetary unit Markka was replaced by Euros. One Euro was around 6 Markkas at time and it became our new currency at 2002. Thats only one change and I still sometimes think how much something cost by converting it to Markka... but that is getting more rare now.

Re: How many switched to Metric

Folks,

The funny thing is that I realize, by comparing certain calculations, that doing it in metric is easier. It's just that, having grown up thinking in feet when it comes to depth, for instance, it is hard to wrap the mind around what it looks like at "x" depth in meters, or even metres!

Re: How many switched to Metric

Sign me up for 3) and 5)

3) because I'm originally from Germany and was raised on metric.
5) because once I started diving nitrox imperial made even less sense.

I had the damn debate in college, using a 4x5 inch camera with a 210 mm lens.

Dividing and multiplying by 32.8 (if you want to be correct) is just plain stupid
if you can do it with 10 instead. I did the metric equations quicker in my head than others with their calculators. Something handy for dil flush cel verification.

Re: How many switched to Metric

The UK's great when it comes to the metric system... food is weighed in Kilos, beer is served in pints, depths are measured in metres and speed limits are posted in miles per hour... and cricket pitches are still 22 yards long!

But it does make it much easier to do the math(s) on pressure calcs etc.
