Why do you dive solo?

Hi all,

Just to know what could be the real motivation of the rebreather solo divers.

I personally like to dive solo for extensive wreck/cave penetration, when a buddy doesn't add any safety et just cause unnecessary silt-up...

Cheers

I don't have any problem to dive with OC buddies but many time I solo dive just because I feel good by myself. No one to think or to look at, just you and you beloved element...it is a great sensation

Re: Why do you dive solo?

hi
i have not got a problem diving with a buddy ,sometimes its nice to share an experience you have had on that dive with someone who was their and saw it with you ,BUT given a choice i prefer solo for one simple reason ,if the brown stuff hits the fan with a diver in the water with me he or she is not so likely to rip my mouthpiece out in a panic for air if I'm solo, and although i try to be as self sufficient in water as possible ,there is always the chance that that panicking diver could be me ripping out your reg.
cheers

Re: Why do you dive solo?

Although I don't necessary mind diving with others, I do prefer to do it alone. In addition to not having to worry about the other guy (or gal), I find that I am personally more in "tune" with my gear and the environment which results in a greater "experience" for me.

Not to mention the fact that I can dive whenever I want without having to look for someone to do it with everytime.

Re: Why do you dive solo?

Although I'm happy when off in a world of my own, I normally dive with others, but we tend to be 5-15m apart, less if the vis is lower than average UK.

I'm the most experienced and qualified of the group I usually dive with so if I lose a buddy I'm more worried about them than I am myself. I've dived solo a few times, hopefully I will again in the future, but I'm not adverse to diving with buddies.

I don't have a particular reason for going solo, but circumstances sometimes conspire to make it desirable or necessary.

Re: Why do you dive solo?

I usually end up solo because my buddy couldn't make it that day or i end up solo because I want to stay down and my buddy has had enough and wants to go up. Occasionally I lose a buddy but no often.

I think solo diving on a CCR is slightly more dangerous than solo diving on OC and a buddy could easily save your life in a couple of the circumstances unique to the unit.

That said I just love solo diving. As someone said said before, I am more in tune with the equipment and I am totally focused on me and the dive. It feels relaxed and free. There is no pressure no one else to worry about and I really get a sense of liberation.

So despite the added danger of CCR I still do it and love it when my regular buddies are not about.

I'm not so sure that there is many OC buddies that can help you with CCR, also with others CCR divers is not so easy.
They can maybe help you if you look to become unconscious but how? How then with deco? How they could see that you're having problems with HighPO2 or Low PO2? etc.

Just my feeling

Re: Why do you dive solo?

I like diving with a buddy but it isn't an issue if I don't have one.

A good buddy is really good but solo is better than a bad one.

Re: Why do you dive solo?

At the end of the day solo diving by an experienced diver makes more sense than diving with a buddy for the following reasons;

1) You are responsible for you and thats it.

2) More focus on your own dive and state under water.

3) On deeper dives an attempted rescue can easily jeopardies both divers, rather than just one.

I personally feel more comfortable underwater alone, but am not opposed to diving with someone else.

Cheers,

J
