Halcyon RB80 info.

I've not seen anything about the RB80, but I am a "discussion" on the YD boards about DIR, and it is one they mention.

Does anyone have any info or opinions?

Have a look on www.direxplorers.com they are covered there, the DIR lot aren't allowed to buy "proper" rebreathers so they don't come on here ;-)

Ian

p.s. I know you are on here Michael but you haven't put anything up yet!

Re: Halcyon RB80 info.

thats not very nice, they just haven't made one yet, so when they do the diving world can bowdown and thank our lucky stars someone finally invented a ECCR.
I wonder if a team member where to buy an ECCR if he or she would still be allowed on the team?

Re: Halcyon RB80 info.

The Dolphin doesn't exactly qualify as DIR, those chaps are rather peculiar about their gear.

Halcyon has some pretty good info on their website about the RB80, a link to it and to a website with a teardown are in the links section.

I haven't tried the RB80 yet, but from a design point of view there is much to like about it. The gas addition system and automatic water drain place the unit ahead of cmf SCRs in my opinion.

But it was designed for a very specific purpose, to extend gas on deep cave explorations. In that it has excelled in the hands of EKPP and WKPP divers. db8us has done some pretty impressive diving with RB80s. The same design envelope also places the bellows (counterlung) very low on your back, great for scootering but not necessarily in other situations. The scrubber is very large to accomodate the needed duration, something few people will really need.

And by no means is the RB80 the only tool for those extreme exploration dives, as the USDCT and others like Jerome in France have shown in the past and present.

DIR and the RB80 are simply one valid approach to diving and rebreather diving.
Not more, not less.

Re: Halcyon RB80 info.

Ya know....

This just makes me think about last night- as I was assembling the webbing on a new backplate for my Meg- I noticed that the oh-so-convenient webbing package I picked up had the cute little Halcyon H's all over the webbing. I'm sure that someone... somewhere... will find that as amusing as I do :-).

And no, I haven't been excommunicated yet for purchasing an ECCR. I've gotten a couple of strange looks, some unsolicited advice, and a lot of expressions of concern, though.
