Trob,

Yeah, I heartily agree with your sentiment, since by now I know a Hell of a lot of people in this community!

We need data, however, and lots of it, because our end of the sport is under-reported and under-represented in the data sets. We can help if we all get in the habit of up-loading our data to DAN, DIMS, and other statistical efforts.
But we also need the right data.

If the problem statement is (loosely phrased) "provide scientific basis for disputing the misconception that rebreathers will kill the user regardless of training or skill level and are inherently dangerous", then we need real data and analysis on actual deaths or accidents. Without it, all findings are suspect and arguments to our defense are anecdotal.

We can have a mountain of data from people who dove and were fine & it will do nothing to help define the causal factors behind rebreather accidents.

Sadly, to truly understand why these accidents happen (and prevent them) we need more of them. Therin lies the rub.

With that said, we - as a community - need to do what you suggest. Document events like our lives depend on it.

because in a way, they do.

Now, if we may get back to our regualrly scheduled program, , I would like to appeal to our members to get involved in the effort to provide data, data, and more data, to DAN to put in its data base.

Shortly we will publish a contact number and data delivery point, and what we are looking for is down-loads from dive computers in certain formats, especially if you are a "deep" diver. Not surprisingly, their data base is weak in this area, given the nature of the beast.

The new Sensus Pro, for instance, will have the right format for downloads, and we will list others shortly.

Cheers!

Rob
That for me is the only possible way to go to a volume of data big enough to allow for proper analysis. Seriously, how many deep divers do not carry a computer at all ? Probably none, they would at least have one in guage mode
