Hi Andy, how's the backplate set up to help with the scrubber? What's the trick?-Andy

1. PRISM
2. 60 mins including scrubber fill. Probably only take 45 mins except I take my time especially with the scrubber filling and have to stop half way through to get a refil - see point 4.
3. Follow the checklist provided in the manual - I generally forget something otherwise !
4. Drinking two beers whilst doing it, a man must not get thirsty whilst concentrating.
5. I don't analyze the gas as I do that when I get fills.
6. Getting the scrubber basket on - easy with an assistant, not without.
I was there in October Rich.

It wasn't just the hour it took you guys to set up. It was the other hours spent repairing various bits

LOL, isn't that the truth.

Insp. - 30 Min (max)

Use a self made check list (part of the prism and Insp. manuals).

Re: How long does your setup take?

My $0:02

1. KISS
2. 40 mins
3. I have my own checklist, which includes everything.
4. A few - this includes boosting O2 or dil as needed - I get it going and keep on building the unit up. I also record any adjustments that are 'outside' the norm, such as calibration of a sensor that's way off in a maintenence log. I do a 'dust check' just to be anal about things. Lastly, I include such mundane things as water, talc for drysuit and the busness ends for the pee-valve.
5. I hardly ever analyse gas since I generally fill myself and use gas from a store in my old twinset. (Actually, I analysed the twins yesterday, for the first time in 4 months, spot on hte money!)
6. Boosting gas, but I don't watch it, I keep working.

Cheers

Andy

MarkK is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: How long does your setup take?

Hadn't really timed it before, but about 45 minutes without scrubber change & an hour with, based on the last couple of times. This is based on the unit (Inspo) being fully cleaned & reassembled from the last dive & no irritating problems like corrosion on cell connections etc to solve. Use the standard checklist, including positive & negative pressure test. Check gas each time I fill which is not for every dive. I try to follow a routine to avoid missing anything.

Re: How long does your setup take?

1. Prism

2. With 2 beers, it takes about an hour
With red wine, around 90 minutes
Dunno why that is.
If I was concentrating, about 30 minutes, but things like PP check happen while it's in the car

3. Nah - Prisms simple. I have the 20 step Inspo checklist on the floor though, so I tread on it occasionally

4. Try to get in the water with a rich mix (pushing 100%) and breath it down at ~5m while doing a bubble check to confirm sensors etc.
Also calibrate on the almost empty O2, then analyse the new O2 seperately and don't recalibrate (as long as it's only a day or two)

5. Turning the unit on

6. At the moment: redesigning the harness for each dive. But I'm sure I have it sorted now (just a couple of tweeks)

Now now, don't confuse me with the KISSing boys, they were the ones breaking and repairing things all trip.

I missed one dive, sensor issues which was tracked down to dirty contacts - because Luke never cleans the damn things and they were covered in blue stuff!!! Had I bothered to prep the thing fully the night before instead of getting stuck into the beer I would have been fine.

Re: How long does your setup take?

I just finished setting up my KISS classic. I began at 8:00 and was finished at 8:30 including the 5 min phone call from my buddy cancelling the dive! I use a mental checklist for assembly but the predive check is on the outside of my toolkit.

1. Cannister filling - 10 minutes. My wife makes me do it outside and I set up a fan to blow away the dust during the filling process. She also makes me use a yard blower to blow the dust off the patio. The actual cannister fill takes less than 5 minutes.

The rest of the assembly takes about 15-20 minutes:

3. Install counterlungs and breathing hose/DSV

4. Install tanks

5. Check calibration on air (before turn on tanks)
Flush loop with oxygen thoroughly, check readout
Turn oxygen off, dump oxygen using oxygen add button
Flush loop with diluent, check readout (turn diluent off, drain excess dil with adv button but leave loop pressurized for positive pressure test)
I only adjust calibration very occasionally (its amazingly stable)

6. Bolt on backplate, wings, then pull negative test.
Set in back of truck, load the rest of my dive gear, then check to see if loop is still negative, release vacuum.

7. At dive site Pre-dive Check:
turn tanks on, check gauges and inflator hose
push adv button to make sure it works
turn on electronics, add a little oxygen manually and look for response.
Check bailout regulator function
Make sure VR3 is set to proper diluent
Prebreath

Here are a couple of pictures. The first shows the backplate (with everything stripped off). I made a couple of Delrin wedges to support the canister on the backplate. This gives much less friction than the curved pad used on the standard BP. The strap goes through the slots next to the wedges and around the canister.

The second picture shows how the wedges are fixed to the backplate with SS screws from the other side.

Sorry about the poor picture quality (cheapo digital camera).

Re: How long does your setup take?

1. Evolution
2. Approximately 45 mins (50min)
3. Comprehensive checklist (on a sticker inside Rebreather cover)
4. Avoid distraction
5. I hope nothing is left out
6. Pos/Neg tests (10 min each)

Westwinds.
