| Classic KISS No. 226 ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Manta Bite Mouth Piece Following on from the FFM thread. As much as I would like a FFM, the cost and limitation of suitable Rebreather masks puts them out of my reach right now. In the thread there was a reference to the Manta Bite mouth piece. Does anyone on the board have real life experience with the Manta Bite mouth piece. It seems like it could be a decent (read affordable) safety factor in the event of unconscious diver. How effective are they at protecting the airway and providing gas? Also do they fit all DSV's particularly the KISS. Cheers Rich

I think MDEMON came up with the idea of bungeeing the mouthpiece into his gob (thats gotta be a serious bit of bungee then ).Aga's can be picked up at a reasonable price second hand if you keep your eyes open.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Manta Bite Mouth Piece Not direct personal experience, but I know someone who used one on a KISS - Mk 2 DSV, the 1st Paragon version which has parallel sides to the mouthpiece rather than the newer slightly elliptical version. The person that used it reported that they got sore gums/cheeks from the big flaps, but that they thought it worthwhile... Last edited by The Purist : 8th December 2005 at 10:02. Yep, read that but the article is mainly about the Divematics BOV rather then the manta. I might give it a go for $40 and see if I can get on with it.I am interested in whether it'll protect the airway though. Perhaps you could give Padowan a nudge and ask him to post. Cheers Rich

| Proper Boffin ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Manta Bite Mouth Piece I have one, as mentioned above - it's fitted to my Divematics BOV as you can see in the article - before I had the BOV I had it fitted to the standard YBOD mouthpiece, so I have experience of it in a number of configurations. Here's my experiences: Basically it's fine, I like it, and have gotten used to it now. It did feel like a bit of a mouthfull at first, but now I like the additional ways that you can have your mouth and not lose the m/p. I never had a problem with jaw ache before, and don't have any problems now - even with he additional weight of the BOV. On the original mouthpiece, which was much lighter than the DiveMatics, I could forcibly open my mouth and shake my head and the mouthpiece would stay in my gob. With the additional weight of the BOV and the more restricted movement caused by the reg hose, I can still open my mouth underwater and it won't fall out, but if I violently shake my head too it might let some water in. Out of the water the weight of the BOV means I do have to still bite the thing to stop it dropping out. Or what I do when I prebreathe is to put my hear forward a bit and rest the whole thing on the counterlungs. I have kept it totally standard, and not cut any of the material off it. If I do a couple of dives ofer a weekend I have no ulcers or any discomfort, but after a week of doing 4 dives a day on a liveaboard, I must say that I had "awareness" in my mouth. Not really painful or proper ulcers, but some slightly sore patches. I'm sticking with it though, as the benefits to me outweigh the slight discomfort if diving repetitively. |

Also do they fit all DSV's particularly the KISS. Hi Rich,Rich my real life experience (about 20 hours on the rig) of that m/p on my Kiss is as follow: 1) I cut it to fit. It took 2 rounds. I kept the "wings" squeezed toward the inside during storage with a piece of rubber band => no ulcer but I felt like still having it in my mouth even 2-3 hours after the dive. 2) No water ingress around the stem (zip tied, model large) 3) No water ingress with loose lips and moving (moving not shaking) my head around. 4) I removed it after a while as I wasn't able to dump gas from the loop around the m/p on ascents (which I prefer over dumping through the nose) and I'm now using an orthodontic m/p, same as on all my regs.
