![]() | marine pharmacology My name is Dr Spyros Stylianou a molecular cancer geneticist. I have my own group working on cancer therapeutics in Cyprus. I am very interest in marine pharmacology. Many cancer drugs that we have on the market and in clinical trials came from marine plants and organism. I am looking for people with the same interest. Thank you very much Spyros ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: marine pharmacology Hello Spyros, I maintain a collection of marine sponges collected sub 80meters and from ocean cave systems. Our working group has the means to do taxonomy and screen extracts from the specimens, but we are not doing any genetics or genomics work at the moment. To-date, we have identified several promising leads for selective anti-microbials and anti-virals, and are conducting screening assays on advanced fractions. We also have a number of samples exhibiting selective cytotoxic properties, however not for cancer cell lines specifically just yet. The website for our project is origin, discovery for life. If you'd like to chat more aabout our work, PM me or e-mail me at explore@oceanopportunity.com. I am looking for collaborators to participate in researach from this collection to expedite the discovery process. Kind regards Mike PS-to anyone out there reading this post that may be interested in providing specimens, please do get in touch...lots of hoops to jump through to ensure that biodiversity ethics are met properly, but there is great potential for discovery out there.

![]() | Re: marine pharmacology Dear all ,The anti-cancer therapeutic programs that I am running now have nothing to do with marine pharmacology. The marine pharmacology project that I want to get into is something that always I was thinking about, and I think now is the right time because the other project that I have running OK. I Mediterranean we have many sponges that I want to test if we can get something out of them. I am looking for toxins and small peptides. In the lab we can do all the work including isolation, purification, the in vitro test in mane cancer cell lines, and the in vivo studies in cancer animal models. Because at this point I don’t know from what sponge to start in collaboration with Cyprus Fishery Department we are thinking to collect small samples from different marine sponge species do a small scale study and if we have something promising we have money from a European Union grand to start a aquaculture for that sponge. We are thinking to start with Axinella polypoides, Axinella verrucosa, Aplysina aerophora, Aplysina caverniophora at this point. I thing, if everything goes OK, in about six months (end of Summer) to start some in vitro studies. I am open for collaboration, advises, change ideas and suggestions. Thank you very much Spyros |
